Vaillant VCW GB 242E - replace pump after 10 years service ?

Vaillant VCW GB 242E - replace pump ?

The boiler is a good 10 years old, when installed, ended up with a
spare circulation pump . now the original pump's ran for 10 years ,
and is still working ..

Question is , would fitting the 'spare' improve anything ? I assume
the original pump cannot now be 100 p/c ..

ok if its working leave well alone .. but might as well get some use
from the 'new pump' ?

Tnx

G .

erm, is there any problem with the system?
if no why go messing, i can bet that the pump is still working well and
is happy enough (i dont have a pump happiness guage before you ask)

just wait till it shows signs of malfunction and then play!

if it aint broke!

If it's working, leave it alone, why change it ?

or do you have secret masochistical tendencies ?

you'll prolly end up with a leak

... hmm, there are websites for that too (so I've heard)

Question is .. how good is the pump after 10 years .. must be some
slippage by now .. and how long is the boiler likely to last ?

There's no reason why it should be significantly degraded from the
performance when new. The most likely weak point is the start capacitor,
which costs a few quid to replace

what do you mean by slippage ?

my 242E lasted 18 years and was still working when I removed it last
year

Ok Geoff,

Well that's a good milestone .. solved the inter fault by giving it a
good de-fluffing and spray with wd40 .. so far so good ..

Slippage , Its a term re pump efficiency .. simply the output leaking
back to the input .. worn impeller would have a bigger clearance so
more leakage .. less pressure .. more applicable to hp pumps ..

G ..

And what's going to wear a pump kicking water around a CH system?

Grundfos pumps (as in Vaillant 242s) have three speeds and for most
systems are set to the middle speed - if you're experiencing problems,
you could just up the speed

However, it sounds like the wind was blowing in a certain direction and
you thought "what a good day to change the pump"

if it's working, don't fiddle with it just for the sake of it

LoL ... it was a cold wind ......

where is the speed control ? there is nothing on the pump as far as I
can see , just marked as single speed 1800 rpm ?

Under the plastic cover, where the start capacitor is

3 position rotary switch

if your CH's working ...

leave it alone

.... Had a look at the spare pump .. no switch .. just the terminals ..
there is only one pump in the boiler serves the hot water and heating
... funny looking pump with one input and two output ports .

One's not an output port - it goes to the air release valve
