Radiator Shelves/Brackets

Just decorating our house, and the radiators previously had wooden shelves
bonded to the top of them with some kind of sealant. Is this method ok to
use, or can it cause problems with hot airflow etc.? Or should I use
brackets to hook the shelves over like the ones you can purchase? If I
should go for the brackets, is there anywhere that sells them on their own?
I'd prefer to reuse the shelves we have, rather than buy new ones esp as one
is 2metres!

TIA
Dean

Why not just use shelf brackets fixed to the wall?

I have found the folloiwng technique works well and avoids the need for
visble brackets etc.

(ASCII art alert - fixed width font required)

Route a rebate onto the edge of a 2x1" batten thus:

__
__| |
| |
| |
|_____|

Route a half inch wide groove into the underside of the shelf thus:

________________________________
__ \
___| |_________________________/

Screw battern loosly to wall just above rad, apply some glue and mount
the shelf, then do up the screws:

Cheers,

Hi,

Thanks, nice idea! I can also stop it short of the ends so it looks nice.
Time to get the router out!
