Freezer motor running 24/7

Hi all,

when we bought our house in 2002 it had a recently (1 yr old) Baumatic
built under freezer in a fitted kitched.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago the motor was running nearly 24/7.
Since the freezer was quite happily freezing, I wondered if a fluff
build up on the fins was a problem. I took the freezer out, gave it a
jolly good hoover, defrosted it and put it back.

It is still running 24/7 on setting "2" (of 4). It is still freezing
fine.

Anyone any ideas on whether it's possible to fix this, as I am sure the
motor is *not* meant to run 24/7.

One thing which may or may not be significant, but when I was
defrosting it, I discovered, in the top left back of the inside a small
wire/pipe, which was clipped into a plastic holder. This was simply
flapping about loose, however, looking at the holder, it appears it
should be clipped to something about 8mm in diameter, since it has two
clips on it (one broken). I tried in vain to (gently) move this around,
but could not find a suitable place to clip it.

Is it easy to get freezers repaired, or are we looking at a new one ?

Are built-under appliances built to a standard size so I could replace
this once easily ?

regards

Is it still under guarantee? Everything gets a year guarantee.

What temperature is the freezer at?
If above -18 deg C get a new one
If -18 to -22 deg C it is OK
If well below -22 deg C it is OK but costing you money

They come in a range of standard sizes, you should be able to find one the
right size.

I think there was meant to be a "Not" before "Everything" in Daves post.

Anyway, even if it's maintaining temperature correctly - it's wasting
electricity.
Now, this could be due to several things.
Failed thermostat causing it to be on all the time.
Slowly failing compressor/... causing it to cool less well than
it should, so it's having to run all the time. It'll likely wear out
soon.

It's probably a failed, or in your case possibly mispositioned, thermostat.
The dangly thing you found is probably telling the motor that the freezer is
still warm, so it never turns off.

Is it easy to get freezers repaired, or are we looking at a new one ?

It's probably the easiest fix that could be made to a freezer beyond
replacing a door handle.

Are built-under appliances built to a standard size so I could replace
this once easily ?

Yes.

Christian.

Is it frozen up? If so a defrost may fix it.

Failing that, if it's getting below -18 C then it looks like a
thermostat fault or thermostat location problem.

If it's not getting down to -18 then maybe you are low on refrigerant
gas. Repairers will have recharging kits.

I had my once expensive 4 year old frost free fridge freezer re-gassed for
about £50. Repairer confirmed gas was low, but warned wouldn't last for ever
as he couldn't locate the leak (as probably inside somewhere). Lasted for
about 18 months before it started being on 24/7 again.
