hardcore..
 

I will be using a load of old bricks from a garden wall and my garage wall
to form the hardcore under the new base. Do I need to break it up into very
small pieces, or is it OK to leave it as whole bricks/clumps of bricks
provided it's evenly distributed? I'll be adding sand to fill in the
remaining gaps.

You can use it in whatever shape piecies you find easiest to compact.
For me, this means a mixture of sized bits, from say half brick down.
