Woodburner Installation
 

Hi,

I'm about to install a woodburning stove. It will need an external twin
wall stainless steel flue on an outside wall. I have a few questions
and would be grateful if any experts can answer them.

My stove has an 8" outlet. Can I use 12" flue outside rather than 8" ?
( I can get some 12" cheap !)

Will this increase or effect the 'draw' in any way ?

I plan on slightly less than 1 metre of stove pipe above the stove
going into the 12" Flue pipe. Does this sound reasonable ?

Probably best ot check with the people who manufactured the stove. I
seem to recall that you need to 'match' the stove to the flue diameter
- at the very least I could imagine it might be difficult to sweep the
flue if you have two different diameters joined together

Again - check with the manufacturer. We bought a new stove from Hunter
a couple of years ago and their technical people couldn't have been
more helpful - even gave us an extra 'optional' part free of charge -
along with lots of advice.

Another useful piece of advice (looking out of the window and it's
peeing down outside) - consider one of those cowls that covers the top
of the flue-pipe - sort of 'coolie-hat' shaped - stops the rain from
pouring down the inside of the flue pipe and bringing all the soot &
tar down with it..... trust me - it's worth the expense !

No expert but I've been researching coz I'm planning to fit a
second (woodburning) boiler working in tandem with my gas-fired
one.

From what I've read 9ins is considered the limit for domestic
flues. The reason is that above 9ins the wider part of the flue
won't get warm enough to "draw" the smoke effectively, probably
resulting in some smokiness within the room.

Eight inch flue does sound rather large to start with. =


I have a Bont Esse solid fuel (Anthracite) room heater that also does nine radiators.=
It is rated at 12kWatts. I also burn wood on this during the spring/autumn months. =


The flue size is five inch diameter. This comes out of the back of the stove and then goe=
s 90=C2=B0 and up into a very old clay liner that is eliptical in shape and about 11" on t=
he major axis. This change in cross sectional area does slow the flow rate down consid=
erably and I do get some smoke blow back occasionally. I've been told that I could run a=
new 5" liner all the way up to increase the draw.

So basically 8" does sound a bit large but if that is what is fitted then I wouldn't go an=
y larger.

I'll second Adrian's comment on the 'Coolie Hat' to cover the chimney pot. =


My solid fuel stove has been out for a couple of days, due to warm weather (in Scotland?=
). Just a few showers was enough to dislodge some soot and block the 90=C2=B0 bend at th=
e back of the boiler. It takes ten minutes with the vacuum cleaner and a long piece of pi=
pe to suck it out.

That's about twice the area - not a hope. You'll get sod-all draught and
the tarry soot will chill out in no time.

Even 8" sounds on the large size for a domestic woodburner.
