My wife and I have been thinking of getting a hot tub. But new ones
are very expensive. Are used ones that are not running easy to repair?
I have found several on craigs list. One said it needed one new jet
and a pump impeller.

I have never opened one up and just wondered if anyone has had
experience with these.

I know more than a body should, I use to liken it to working on sports
cars and never being able to drive one. I even have NSPI T-shirts/ the
water industry. Can also design whoopie jets,.

What do you want to know? I'm guessing it's maybe like trying to write
a paragraph on how to buy a used car...

The jet involves a bit, broke the impeller getting to the shaft seal.
Running without a filter, impeller chews up kiddy toy, gets stuck in
the jet, screw driver gets involved and now they can't get the guts
for the jet, so the whole thing needs replacing.

Swimming pools and spas are like ahhh, what was it? Airplanes!
Cost like $80+ hr. Or sports cars, or Bose sound systems. Never tryed
to get parts on line. EEE Len Gordon, im getting a headache.

The wife made me toss off a spa that was already on the trailer.
Was a rovell too. Rovell good, swirly plastic and gel coat bad, but
do-able. Look for cracks vertically and or see if the floor gets
contact with the floor, if not the tub will settle and hang on the
lip, thus cracking. Toss the electronics and dream up the wiring to an
air switch cammed mirco switch set up and never see it again. The way
I do it is pretend that most of the equipment is shot. Thus ya need a
new 2-speed pump one hp plus or two pumps. Hmmm, wonder if I still
have that blower.

I give up, this could go on forever. You could do the electronics like
wall switches tied together. All depends if it is 110 or 220. Lots of
jets bad, Hayward and Jacuzzi jets best. Can tell just by the look.

I have two now at my vacation rentals. Would like one for my current
residence. Have had good luck with Catalina, although I know there are
higher end brands available. They are not rocket surgery to fix, but can
get spendy. I have a good spa guy, and he talks me through a lot of the
repairs, then comes and fixes what I can't or the big stuff. They do run
(operate) quite a bit, even when not used, and anything like that is bound
to have wear issues. But the upside is worth it IMHO. I'd buy another in a
heartbeat if I could find the right one locally. BTW, I like the 7 footers
for two people. The 8 footers are better for more people, just more water
to keep hot and maintain.

Educate yourself, and know what to look for. My spa friend gets them for
free from people who just want them gone. Or he gives them a couple of
hundred on trade ins. Ask local dealers for trade-ins. Usually they've
been gone through, and at least you know they're running and have some
usually short guarantee period on them.

You can find deals, but some of the off brands and even big brands have lots
of problems. Like the man said, it depends on what's wrong with it, and how
much you want to spend on it. And don't forget moving costs. They are a
booger to move for us old farts. AND the cost to run a proper electric line
to it. And covers are about $250, too.

If you know pumps and mechanics, it's all parts. They're all available on
the Internet. Most pumps and hoses are held in place with common unions and
spa hose connectors, so are easy to exchange, except for the ones they put
in the most Gawd awful tight spaces, which is most of them.
