sheet steel finishing and partial engine turning?!

i'd like to apply the engine turned, swirly effect to some steel sheet
and was wondering a few things. i ran across
http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~eamonn/et/items.gif (middle item) and noticed
the turning seems to just STOP at a really nice edge. anyone know how
to do this? also, say i actually manage to accomplish this, with
un-turned bands of plain steel on the sides. what can i do to shine up
the finish on the sides to change them from dullish dark grey to a
slightly brighter silvery (similar to the overall color of the swirls)
?? any help and tips on finishing is MUCH appreciated! thanks!

You polish the whole piece of metal first. then you mask off the parts you
dont want to put swirls on.

mask it with what? wont it just turn through tape of all kinds? maybe
i should just clamp strips of thin steel over it. whats a method to
get a nice finish on the non turned sheet?

Use Steel Shim to mask after polishing the surface to the shine you require.
