She was useful as a guide and translator because Hidatsa slave raiders had captured her in Shoshone territory far upriver (Salmon, Idaho). |

The truth of the matter is that nearly every nation/country throughout has, or does, keep slaves. And, the Civil war was not fought over the slavery question, per se, although that was an extremely good excuse to raise a hue and cry. |
