Default 90-10 cu-ni for back up bar for SS?

I have a couple pieces of 1/2" thick Cu-Ni plate that I was planning
on using for back up when welding steel. Before I try it with
stainless I though maybe I should ask here if this is a good idea. I
know pure copper will work but I don't have any 1/2" thick copper
plate.
Thanks,
Eric
