I'd make that 'some of us'. Prior to the SS legislation people were able
to invest as they saw fit. How did that work out? Sadly the majority of
US citizens aren't too good at running their lives. Their votes do
influence the running of the country though.

"Prior to the SS legislation" (1935) the stock market had crashed. Those who had invested as they saw fit went broke.

The idea is SECURITY. There is no security with investments. Anti-SS folks play games with statistics all the time, claiming better results with private investment. For some folks, sure. Others get a lesson in what "security" means -- or doesn't, in their cases.
