My wife is the equivalent of a full RN in the States. She was shocked at
the advertising for drugs advising people to 'talk to your doctor' about
meds with a dizzying array of potential side effects.
She also noted within a couple years lawyers were mentioning some of the
same drugs and side effects, saying "If you suffer from any of these
symptoms, you may be entitled to"

Here in AU, there are no commercials flogging prescription meds.
Not that I've seen anyway.

And the GDP goes up both ways! g

The last drug I worked on (Sanofi-Aventis's rimonabant), could shave
25 pounds off your gut in a year with no effort. That is, if you
didn't commit suicide before the year was out. That was a bit of a
problem.

FDA nixed it for that trivial reason; they have no sense of humor.
$100 million in marketing and clinical trials down the drain. sigh
They did manage to sell some in France and Germany, however, before
their drug agencies read the US FDA's report.

Australia sounds less crazy all the time.

No, it doesn't. That's only rent seeking.

Any serious look at the history of human beings over the millennia shows
that the species began in poverty. It is not poverty, but prosperity,
that needs explaining. Poverty is automatic, but prosperity requires
many things -- none of which is equally distributed around the world or
even within a given society.

Correct me if this is not counted as an addition to GDP. You have the
advertising (service addition to GDP); additional sales of the drug
(product addition to GDP); and legal fees (rent-seeking).

So it's two out of three, if I'm right. I shouldn't have suggested
that the legal fees add to GDP. I was thinking of the advertising.
