Rusty broke ...

I call my little JD 317 tractor Rusty because it is . Unfortunately ,
Rusty has puked a con rod out the side of the crankcase . The motor in
question is a Kohler KT17QS , and I'm not sure if it's the series 1 or
series 2 . The serial number indicates it's a series 1- one of the last they
made , which had pressure lube to the camshaft and splash to the crank and
rods . HOWEVER , I noticed today while pulling parts off to get it out of
the tractor that it has an oil passage drilled in the crank throw , which I
believe is only present in the series 2 motors .
Any of y'all have any experience with these motors ? I need to know if
there is any parts interchangeability , I'll be needing at least a con rod .
The hole in the crankcase is no problem , I can weld a patch over it . I
think I can save the crank , if not they're available on eBay for a
reasonable price . Doesn't look like anything else was damaged , but I'll
know more when I get it torn down .
There's another welding project out in the yard , the kid next door
snapped the chain on a Polaris 350L 4 wheeler , when it wrapped itself
around the front sprocket it busted out part of the tranny case . I don't
think he's going to fix it , the bill will be around 500 bucks and I don't
think he paid that much for it .
