On further thought, maybe I could mount a small motor fitted with a slotting saw to my lathe carriage or compound, and mount an indexing wheel to the back of the spindle. This seems like it could be done cheaply if I could find the right parts.

Ayup..that will work nicely with little expense

Lots of stuff on the net...

"Virtually all members of [radical] groups sincerely believe that
they are fighting the Establishment. In reality they are an indespensible ally
of the Establishment in fastening Socialism on all of us.
The naive radicals think that under Socialism the "people" will run everything.
Actually, it will be a clique of Insiders in total control, consolidating and
controlling all wealth. That is why these schoolboy Lenins and teenage Trotskys
are allowed to roam free and are practically never arrested or prosecuted.
They are protected. If the Establishment wanted the revolutionaries stopped,
how long do you think they would be tolerated?

This looks very good. Since I'm only planning to cut delrin I can probably get away with something less beefy. As for fitting the work, I can cut the taper on the backside afterwards, giving me a nice big cylinder for mounting. In the end though, there's a guy in town with a big horizontal mill who is friendly and fair. I think I'll just bring the stuff to him for the slots!

On further thought, this guy can do many serious milling operations on his lathe, for very little investment compared to buying a mill. I like it!
