Looks Like Stainless... ?
I grabbed a piece of scap to make a part today. It looks like stainless, is
heavy like steel, and machines easy like 1144. What the heck is this mystery metal? Seriously. I don't know, but I want to. |

Does a magnet stick?

... Does a magnet stick? Yes, but this was originally a mounting part on a motorcycle (device and bike both long gone), and there is no sign of any rust. It doesn't machine like it was plated with anything either. ----- Regards, Carl Ijames "Bob La Londe" wrote in message ... I grabbed a piece of scap to make a part today. Seriously. I don't know, but I want to. Spark test? Since I have already machined the part I don't want to beat on it, but it sure got my attention. I was all prepared to fight with it and listen to screaming, skating, and chatter, and I didn't get any of that. |

Sounds like a 400 series SS, perhaps 416. http://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=971 -- Ned Simmons |

If it is not magnetic it is probably a 303 stainless. John |

And one of my medium term projects will be welding some stainless. I want to make a hinged hood/lid for my big BBQ grill. I suspect I'll have to let the local metal bender take advantage of me for a sheet of that though. |

I'm going to make a new set of grates for my Brinkmann barbeque, the stock ones are made out of porcelain coated cast iron which is starting to flake off and sometimes ends up as a sort of grit on the food....I'll be using 1/4 thick A36 plate instead of stainless though.....there's a fab shop up in the next town that'll burn out simple shapes with a cnc plasma table at very reasonable rates. Current plan is to leave one pair solid for use as griddle, and I'll probably drill a grid pattern into the other ones. |
