I suspect he means for a Newsreader. I think Forte Agent works great
for this.

I've not tried W8. I'm in an every other release mode for m$oft. In
fact I want to figure how to dual boot back to XP. W7 is not my friend
for peer to peer file sharing and backup.

Welcome to hell..... Been running 8 for 7 months now.

Which program are you trying to set up?

I can tell you that the included mail program sucks...

I went back in time and am running an ancient version of t-bird. Allows
newsgroup access and Email, but doesn't have all the tabs, colors and
crap in the way.

T-bird 2.0.0.24 runs just fine. And it allows easy filtering.

If you still have the old computer, it might be possible for you to just
copy & move your entire Thunderbird profile (settings and everything) to
the new computer using Mozbackup.

I've used Mozbacvkup many times on XP & Win 7 systems - and it works
like a treat. First use Mozbacup create a backup of the old profile on
the old system (works for firefox too) - usually on a memory stick; then
just reverse the process on the new system by using Mozbackup to
"retsore" the old profile on the new computer. (You need to have
Thunderbird already installed on the new system)

I've never done this on Win 8; so there could be issues I'm not aware
of.

Mozbackup can be downloaded here (or you can google for other sites)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mozbackup/

hope it helps.

Thunderbird IS a news reader . Only reason I don't use it for newsgroups
is that I'm still using OE . I use Tbird for my msn.com account so I don't
have to use outlook.com . They're almost as bad as google ...

And hell it is! W8 sucks balls.

I concur with Snag & yourself. I too now use Firefox & Thunderbird.

Filtering on NGs seems to workok.

Windows 8 ****ing blows and it's for morons. I'm using Windows 7 64bit which I find preferable to Windows XP 64 bit. In addition, many modern CADCAM programs no longer support Windows XP. I will never downgrade to Windows 8 or 8.1. but for you I'm sure Windows 8 will be just wonderful.

Forte Agent is a much better friend.

"The socialist movement takes great pains to circulate frequently new labels for its ideally constructed state.
Each worn-out label is replaced by another which raises hopes of an ultimate solution of the insoluble basic
problem of Socialism, until it becomes obvious that nothing has been changed but the name.
The most recent slogan is "State Capitalism."[Fascism] It is not commonly realized that this covers nothing more
than what used to be called Planned Economy and State Socialism, and that State Capitalism, Planned Economy,
and State Socialism diverge only in non-essentials from the "classic" ideal of egalitarian Socialism. - Ludwig von Mises (1922)
