Hi there.

Is there a simple piece of equipment/technique that will allow me
to reduce the cross-section of, say, a wire?

The material is stainless-like. I want to do some simple experiments
on various properties as a function of coldworking with minimal
expenditure. The total amount of reduction will need to be at least
60%.

Thanks

p.s.: I'm a metallurgist.

Hello Stretch
You could build a simple surplus hydrualic cylinder powered wire puller
using home made hardend drill rod dies, of course, depending on the dia.
of the wire and the sample lenghts required. However, Stainless steel
work hardens very quickly so you would have to anneal between draws in
order to get a 60% reduction.
