I like the mast handle idea, don't know if it's right or not but it
sounds reasonable.

I would say this is probably correct.

I've seen tent poles spliced with a similar device. I can't find an
image now. The poles are skived at identical angles; laid together and
the bands are clamped around them. The "handle maintains accurate
distance between the clamps.
