I finally shelled out some real money and bought a pail of real patrs
washing solvent. I must say right now, on the record, that it is far
better and also safer than anything like kerosene etc. It basically
does not smell and has no volatile organic compounds (VOC), so there
are no smelly fumes. It burns like any other petroleum product, but
it does not make as much fumes, so the danger of it catching fire is a
lot lower.

Sounds like the smart thing to do.
