I know lots of people who carry because they need to, not because it makes
them a "badass." A few of them are quite enough of a real life badass
already. A number of them are attorneys or judges, including one former
USN SEAL, who started carrying after a spate of homicides and attacks
against lawyers by disgruntled/crazy litigants locally. Others include a
jeweler and other merchants who are obvious targets. Some are women who
work late or alone in downtown offices or who have had frightening
experiences with ex's or spurned suitors. None of them could be described
as "trigger happy idiots." Carrying is a chore and a hassle, as well as a
serious responsibility. "This society" holds differing degrees of risk or
safety for different people, depending on their personal circumstances.
If you have no need to carry, good. But not everyone gets to enjoy your
degree of personal safety.

AND, it is a right to do so, so long as you follow the law in your
jurisdiction. The reason is irrelevant.
