My experience parallels yours in many ways. Baptized into the church,
excommunicated at my own request. They are definitely not Christians, as
they consider their books to be superior to the bible, and they have

programs for low-income people, at both the state and the county level,
including Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid) and the County Medical Services
Program (CMSP).

It isn't a matter of availability. It's a matter of whether one is at least
minimally responsible, or not, and what the consequences are of not being
responsible.
