Ricochet effect. People can be cowed, temporarily, but the buggers just
keep rising up against authoritarian governments no matter what stripe
they may be. Yes, the might and power of the United States can
occasionally put powerful dictators in control of definable borders.

But the blowback is usually a bitch.

Yep, the best thing we could have done for the Iranians trying to create
some freedom for themselves would have been to get America (the great
Satan) deeply involved and plastered all over it. Nothing makes people
happier than to have their revolution co-opted by outside parties.

But just for laughs, what would you have done if you were in his shoes?

He could have STFU, but that concept is not within his cranium. Say
something, anything, even if it is stupid, contradictory, or a lie, but say
something.
