As scrap metal soars in value, roads become a little more dangerous

Manhole covers are being stolen across the state - including in Easton this
week - after the price of scrap metal surged to an all-time high this year
after a decline in 2008, authorities said.

Locally, scrap metal thieves are stealing manhole covers in Easton
subdivisions, police said Friday, putting drivers and joggers at risk.

Three covers were stolen in the last week, according to Department of Public
Works Superintendent Wayne P. Southworth. Two were taken on Old Country Way
in North Easton and one from School Street in South Easton.

The missing cover on School Street was found by a runner who nearly fell
into the hole.

"It's extremely dangerous for someone to do this," said Southworth. "It
scares us to death here. I wouldn't want to be driving down one of these
roads. You could damage your car and suffer serious injury."

Why don't the local police check for man hole covers at the scrap
dealers. When they find one they arrest everyone in the yard for
receiving stolen property. Lawyering up and getting people out of jail
gets expensive in a hurry. If there is no one buying them then no one
will waste their time stealing the covers. Looks like a good
opportunity for a police sting operation.

Because random searches without cause are still illegal.

however, manhole covers made from a steel shell filled with concrete are
cheaper, have no scrap value, and can be manufactured with less
equipment than cast.

also, scrap dealers in some locales are required to take down ID of each
person presenting stuff and to ID what they brought

Even in cases of "terrorism"?

Unless you're some TSA pervert who's empowered to do things that would get
an ordinary citizen arrested. :-[

Thanks,
Rich

They send in a undercover police officer who says the man hole covers
followed him home when he went for a walk. He offers no evidence that
he legally owns the covers which are clearly marked "Property of XXXX
City". He then arrests the person(s) who bought stolen property.
