Two distinct degrees NOW. But the statement " It WAS the
same ............" is absolutely true.

Yup. At Michigan Tech there was "communications option" and "power
option" differing in a few courses, but the degrees awarded were the
same: BSEE (or MSEE).

A director of engineering at GM once told me that the value of
engineers wasn't what they knew as found, but what they could learn
and continue to learn throughout a career. He was responding to my
question re why an automobile company (in a time when the only
electronic device in a car was the radio) would hire EE's. He said
because they could learn whateverthehell they decided to learn,
including design of engines and transmissions.

Wow, I've heard stories of snow cows, and the universal complaint "OH,
NO!! NOT THE TASTEE-FREEZE!!! And the three kinds of students, the
winter sports nuts, drunken party animals, and those not coming back.

I once worked with a native Ugandan whose first experience of the
United States was obtaining a chemical engineering degree from
Michigan Tech. He refused to even go to Michigan after that.

My family was from Houghton, and Calumet. I lived in Hancock until I
was 9 or so.

The family home was right across the street from the science buildings
as I recall.

When they added to the campus about 20 yrs ago..they took out the big
old 3 story (plus basement) home and about 20 other buildings and homes.

Grandpa ran the Swift Meats distributorship for nearly 50 yrs up there.
I took a few classes at the Tech after I came home from overseas.
