Things have gotten worse in Motor City since the column was published. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122584326266699163.html The article says in part:"Under the nonsensical "two fleet" rule that now applies, manufacturers meet the standards separately with their "domestically" and "nondomestically" produced fleets. What does this have to do with making sure U.S. consumers get good mileage? Nothing. It's a naked handout to the UAW at the expense of the companies and their customers." Detroit has been politically controlling the CAFE rules for decades, while the big three continued their decline, and billions of gallons of gas was needlessly consumed by millions of Detroit Gas Hogs. So, if we are to eliminate one "nonsensical" CAFE rule, lets take the time to look at all of them. I suggest that we start with the silly "Flex Fuel" rule that lets Detroit continue to crank out gas hogs that don't count against their fleet average just because they are capable of burning a fuel that is not even generally available in many/most states.
