My ISP dropped newsgroup support a year ago. So I got a block account from
Octanews.com Almost free, I paid $4 for the first block and haven't used
it up yet.

it went down yesterday, back up now. It would be nice to have another news
server all set up. Any recommendations? I'm not paying a monthly charge.
Block billing is OK

Yep! Setup your newsreader for nntp.aioe.org. It is a totally open news
server. There is no registration procedure, just use it.

Then I guess that you have never had, or never learned how to use, a real
news server/reader. More importantly, Google seems to actually encourage spam
and spammers. On Usenet, Google is the problem, not the solution.

No registration BUT they do have limits to stop spammers. Take a look at
their web site.

At work I've used whatever PC, Mac or Unix software the IT departments
installed. Downloading other software was generally discouraged. I
played with spam filtering and various tree-structured presentations,
then went back to a simple chronological display with only read/unread
indicated, which works well on a large screen.

This PC has a minimalist configuration to keep clone backups of C: on
one DVD.

I've been on news.individual.net since they were the U. Berlin and free.
It's about 12 bucks a year now, billed annually, text only, and I've never

I've been on Forte's APN (Agent Premium Newsgroups) servers for close
to a year now and they're great. It's a full-newsgroup server (text
and binaries) costing $2.95/month and is uncapped (IE: VERY fast)

They filtered out 98% of that spam that hit the group a short while
back. I didn't even know there was a problem until you guys started
complaining. It's well worth it. http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php

glorb.com - $10 a year. They have filtered and unfiltered.

I don't see much spam at all. Been using it for a few years so you think
I would notice.

From the FAQ:
Each IP address --- whether it’s your client, or your whole network
--- has the right to post no more than 25 messages per day ; accepted
and rejected messages are counted together. If an IP sends more than
5 articles that are rejected by the server, it looses the right to
post for the next 24 hours. This server does not allow users to post
multiple copies of the same message (idest multipost). Every article
which is very similar to a previously post is rejected.

Seconded. APN is an Easynews reseller and one of the best resellers out
there. They formally resold Supernews then switched just before
Supernews was bought by Giganews. Filtering is not quite as strict as it
was before, but still very good.

I've been using gigaNews, they are definitely more expensive,
but seem to be quite reliable. One actual problem is they keep
TOO MUCH! They have this group back to 2003, and my newsserver

And I can read/skim the firstpage of each article (not just the

I am using Giganews, and most messages pop up before I can let up on
the mouse button. Also, I can read the entire day's new messages
offline. I can sync my news reader and take it with me on a laptop,
then post the replies when I get home.

434106 right now. I use the ld Netscape 4.78, with it set to only
display unread messages, and only keep unread headers. The .snm

unread messages. There are some unread headers in the file, retained to
keep a thread intact. Once the thread is finished, it is purged.

Yeah, I sort of miss having a 500 kilobyte/sec connection at work
rather than 4 at home, but nothing else about that place. The phone
line is too old, long and noisy for DSL and I get my HDTV for free

There are several real, free NNTP servers. With a bad connection I
sure wouldn't use Google Groups. My connection just tested at 1086
kilobyte/sec with WSMonlie streaming in the background. OTA TV isn't
available here, so I use broadband. I get basic cable service &
broadband for $64 a month. I have Lifeline telephone service (no long
distance) for another $13 a month. If I didn't need a good connection
to service computers for my volunteer 'Computers for Disabled Veterans"
program I wouldn't be online, at all.

There are threads on the Giganews server from 2003, and I have some
archived on one of my computers back to 1999, or earlier. If I replied
to any of them, they would appear as new threads, except on Google
Groups, or a similar archive.

That old thread you replied to doesn't pull the other headers back

Of course not. Now unsubscribe from rec.crafts.metalworking, purge
newsgroups on your reader and then resubscribe and download the
headers.

I recently set up a new computer at home, and using Agent, didnt think
about it and downloaded All Headers

It appears that Earthlink archives back to about 2002....

I went outside, got sidetracked doing something for 4 hours..and it
was still downloading headers (dialup)

Your reader may have a data bit set to ignore message prior to a

And yes..they would appear as new threads as yet unread

I've tried that. It will remove the .snm and .dat files, but the list
of headers is still in the hostinfo.dat file till they all expire. All
it does is reload them as read, then the file is compacted when you
close the the newsreader. After the reload, any unread files are still
marked as unread. I've had to delete the .snm file when it is corrupted
during downloading a lot of headers. the .dat files for each group are
the kill filters.
