Default Steel sheet, where to buy

I need to buy some steel sheet, such as appx. 1/2 mm thick, 18x48" or
some such size. Are there any online suppliers who you would
recommend? I want regular steel, non galvanized, preferably suitable
for spot welding. This is for making motor shroud for my wire brushing
motor.

thanks

Some places may list it by gage rather than by mm or inch thickness

26 gage is .475mm
25 gage is .556mm
24 gage is .635mm

Most steel yards would have whatever size you want, but they might not
want to sell less than a 4' x 8' sheet. 24 gage is 1 lb/ft^2, so at
$0.80 per lb a sheet of it would be $25.60. There are at least 3
places within 15 minutes of my house in the Mnpls area that would have
it, there must be several similar places around Chicago.

Places that sell autobody supplies sometimes have sheets like you
describe. Any auto restoration place will have a stock of it.
Probably not a body shop, but very likely a restoration shop.

Here is a source for 18 x 48 sheet of .025" (.635mm or 24 gage)
annealed 4130 for $21.83:

Surely there must be a metal yard or two near by you. Look in the phone
book. Some, like Pacific Industrial Supply in Seattle, can custom
shear, and also have pre-sheared odd pieces around. Home Despot has a
small selection of smaller size steel panels up to 24X48" or so in
various gauges. Be prepared to pay the sucker price for these.

Since no one so far has mentioned it,
what about your local junk yard?
there shure to have loads of scrap items like refuse bins etc made
from sheet steel in all sorts of sizes and thicknesses.
theyl be happy to have a beer for the amount you want.
Get recycling!!!
Obviously, youll have to cut it about to get the size you want.
Here in the UK, we always check the junk yard for odds and ends first
before chasing up new.
Unless ofcourse the job demands it. then it costs a lot more.

I am glad that you recovered from your "blowing dust over the totally

Yea, it's too bad he couldn't work in a few more. :-)
Maybe how soon he needs it, "within a fortnight".

Oh did I miss something here? It's good that when I came back I can read
about 1/2mm thich by 18"x48" sheet metal requests.

After all, it's hard to find sheet metal in the united states.

Peel the cover from a junk water heater, sometimes the insulation is
glued on but sometimes not.
Nice coat of enamel which you can remove where the welds will be.

I thought that would be too thin, but by golly you're right! I just
measured a piece I've had around quite a while: .021" including the
enamel on both sides, so probably 26 gage (.0187).

I only have about a 2' square piece left. All the rest of it was
welded into various cars as repair patches from time to time. Had one
Dodge Aspen that had so much water heater "skin" I swear it pulled to
the right when it passed the gas company...

If I were making a shroud for a spinning wheel, I'd use considerably
heavier material. I'm thinkin' vibration and fatigue cracking. But
it ain't my shroud.

The one I turned into a firewood loading chute mikes 0.020". It's
painted outside and bare metal inside. It was easy to work with; I cut
it with hand snips and bent it over a plank with a rubber hammer. It's
flimsy and may not contain flying objects. Are you just covering the
vent holes in an open motor?

I had the same sort of idea but with the cans from old washing
machines/driers/refrigerators. Nice flat sheet metal, for the most
part.
Nothing glued on, either.

I've got several sturdy wheel guards that came in an auction lot.
Unless you want the fun of making one yourself, email me with some
idea of what you need and I'll see if they're close.

40+ years ago, the welder who occupied the other half of the house
brought home some drive chain guards that had been declared unusable
at the heavy equipment plant where he worked. He used them to replace
the floor pan in his FiL's 59 Buick from the rear bumper all the way
to the top of the cowl. After he beefed up the suspension to carry the
additional weight that car sure had a smooth ride.
