Mirror for Mag Base

We have 3 girls in the family, plus my wife. Mirrors get broken from
time to time. I collect the pieces. They can be cut the same way as
ordinary glass. I have also mounted a grinding wheel in a die grinder
and mounted it on the lathe toolpost, and ground a rough-cut piece to a
circle to go in a round mirror holder.

The mirror helps to see the indicating dial when the spindle is turned away.
I used a 3” wire frame mirror in the past but the stores no longer stock
them.

You could adapt a mechanic's mirror.

Just keep in mind depending on the rigidity of your setup your indicator may
show inaccurate readings upside down.

A small piece mirror like from a cosmetic compact works fine held in your
hand.

You can get a 2 1/4" telescoping inspection mirror from West Coast Tool
for ~ $5. If all you want is the mirror, they sell replacements:

http://www.westcoasttool.net (search for ULC2)

Hard disk drives for PC have platters about 3.5" dia with a1.25" hole.
The metallic surface is one of the brightest mirror around.
Made of metal, can be cut and drilled.
Lots of junk drives around.
