Kaydon Bearings Ulta slim bearings - cost is prohibitive -Alternative supplier??
 

Hi,

I have a project which I would like to use a Kaydon ultra slim bearing
set up (Bore=approx 75mm crossection width =2.5mm bearing size 1.5mm.)

The price I was quoted for an ultra slim bearing with specs close to
the above is around 500bucks. (to me, thats a !!!!!I) This cost rules
out Kaydon for this part by a long way. I would like to find a source
for around 20bucks if possible. Its a light duty application. Anybody
know of a supplier?

It's a long way from $500 to $20. Look at airframe control bearings
instead. It's been a long time since I've purchased any, but you may
be able to get under $100 for something in that size range.

Alpine bearing seems to have good pricing. There were 250 bucks lower
in price on a set of tailstock bearings (530.00) for the Leblond lathe.
These were NN30xx series super precision bearings. and three angular
contact bearings 7305B series.

This sounds like you may need to look at something like furniture-
grade
"lazy-susan" type bearings, or maybe try finding something that has
been rendered surplus on eBay or some other place. As other posters
(and you) have noted, it's a huge difference between the Kaydon price
and what you want to pay. You could possibly build your own bearing
using loose balls and plates with v-grooves with some kind of ball
retainer. I have done that before in applications that are manual
spin,
low-speed, "don't worry about it" sorts of things. If you are looking
for
any speed and accuracy, though, I doubt that $20 will get you very
far,
regardless of the load/duty rating.

Cut a couple of rings off of a solid sleeve type bearing, if it's light
duty - ie, oilite or MDS-Nylon. Or re-engineer so that you don't need it
so thin and don't cut rings. You're paying for micro-miniature ball
bearings (many small parts and fussy grinding) in the original price -
you can't afford those at the price you want to pay.

eg - MSC has 3" ID 3-3/16 OD iglide plastic bearings for $15.05, which
are 2" long - either cut off a ring of that, or change the design. Only
thing I find that comes close to your size and price, FYI.

If you need a stiffer bearing, they have bronze 3 ID x3-1/2 OD, by 4"
long for $50, which you could cut a bunch of rings off of. 3" is 76.2mm
ID since you seem to be thinking metrically.
