If memory serves the constellation we know as the milky way they
called the tree of life and there is a dark spot in it

This "tree of life" is central to many of their myths

I think that our sun crosses that dark point on dec 21 2012 and the
mayan calendar resets based on that event. and the calendar period
they use is some ridiculous number long like 5000 or more years.
despite the fact that their culture was not around at the start date
of it and nor at the end date (Although they couldnt have predicted
that)

the long count calendar is one of those historical oddball calendars
that makes little sense but that keeps archaeologist busy and employed

Its also hiding in my useless pile of trivia/
