Take this test. See how you compare to elite College students
Take the 60 question test and see how your results compare to those of
students at some of America's elite Universities and Colleges. I was disappointed in my score. . . until I compared it to the results of students from Harvard, Yale and some of the elite schools. Enjoy, Dennis |

I scored 48 correct out of 60 for 60%. I should have read the questions more slowly. Dennis Correction again 48 out of 60 = 80%. A bit better. However I should mention I got a D in High School typing. Probably because the teacher couldn't understand how someone with such large hands could keep from hitting multiple keys. A problem that is still haunting me. Dennis Answers to Your Missed Questions: Question #5 - D. Yorktown Question #9 - B. was a stalemate. Question #13 - B. the nature and control of Reconstruction. It was a pretty well written test despite a high reliance on, well, trivia. Seems to mix understanding (the part I do better with) with memorization (not so much). Couple outright surprises like #60 - I answered "servicing the debt" as well. |

Couple outright surprises like #60 - I answered "servicing the debt" as well. I am the same way, as well, remembering details is my challenge (to put it in a positive light). Sometimes I can dismiss some multiple choice answers as clearly nonsensical, from wrong time period, or as not applying to question, even if I do not know the actual answer (if it was asked open ended). 12 years ago I studied to take a GMAT test, and the books talked about some useful test taking tricks like this: Example: who said "give me liberty or give me death"? A) Albert Einstein B) Patrick Henry C) Jesus Christ D) Bob Swinney E) Claude Monet Even if I did not know who it was, or had no idea who was Patrick Henry, but knew the other four people, it is pretty clear that four out of five choices are not very likely to be correct. Usually in a test, you can dismiss 2-3, if not 4, answers outright. That helps raise the score a little. i |

And I haven't set foot in a classroom in more years than I choose to admit. But I was one of those who dropped out of college and went back later. They made me take a U.S. History class I didn't want. It seemed to me to be more or less at a junior high level. I was talking to the professor after one day and said that I was rather disappointed in his class. He pointed out that, for many of the students, this was their first exposure to the material. Now, we had a lot of students that were not U.S. natives. So, I retorted that, for graduates of a foreign high school that were not ready for a college level American History course, perhaps a remedial class would be in order. Darn that wasn't very easy. You answered 50 out of 60 correctly - 83.33 % It wasn't easy, but it's interesting to me that posters to this NG scored so high. Our average must be around 50 or so, which I consider pretty good for someone who doesn't read history for fun or as part of his or her job. The average age for this NG is probably pretty high, too, and you can forget a lot of details if you don't keep up with the subject(s). I suspect we'd do well against elite college students in many areas, including math and science. We have a lot of years of experience, and there's some degree of advantage because many of us care about the content of these subjects in one way or another--a fact that counterbalances the tendency to forget over time. What's left for the students? I'd say English, except that most posters here are quite articulate and write at a very high level. I think we're well above the level of typical college students. Maybe we should all apply for honorary PhDs... -- Ed Huntress |

It doesnt have to know anything to answer back 1492 if it hears the word columbus. "Parrotting" answers doesn't add comprehension and is a sign that they didnt actually UNDERSTAND anything they just repeated. Isn't it Scary that a highschool senior can repeat but not yet think? Dennis http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/ You answered 52 out of 60 correctly 86.67 % Average score for this quiz during September: 73.0% Average score since September 18, 2007: 73.0% You can take the quiz as often as you like, however, your score will only count once toward the monthly average. The test mostly tests of how well read the test taker is. College students did not yet have much time to become well read. i |

And the way history is presented in schools is not very memorable. I hope I get my son to take the test, because he is pretty well-read and he's studied a lot of American History. If he doesn't do as well as Dad, it will tell me something. He already has a heavy reading and test-taking load, so I'm sure that taking a test for fun or curiosity doesn't appeal to him very much. OTOH, he does like to beat Dad at almost everything. I have to tap into that. d8-) -- Ed Huntress |

And, when I was a kid, you learned or you flunked. The schools were not at all bashful about this. But things are different today. I could go into a long story, but the bottom line is that the high schools, at least the big schools here in California, will do a pretty good job of teaching those students who want to learn. And they will let those students slide who want to slide. I attended what was then one of the better public high schools in the country (Princeton High School, Princeton, NJ) and it clearly gave me a leg up in college. But my son's high school education was far better than mine in every subject. He was a full year ahead of me in math, biology, history, art, and just about everything else. He had opportunities to take all kinds of advanced classes and he grabbed them all. Given good schools, one can get a good education in a public high school -- or slide through, as you say. -- Ed Huntress |

I think most of us are from when the educational system was in the business of teaching rather than social engineering. The feds poking its nose into this has not made things better. Let each state manage its affairs and the other states look around to see if other states are doing it better and copy it. The feds take the approach that since they are feds they know best. Keep as much of education policy local with parent involvement. I'm all for attaching funding to the student so options other than the public system can be exercised by the parent. Education in this country, for the most part, is a government monopoly. While I'm a back sliding Baptist, I fully endorse the efforts of the Catholic parochial school systems. The are many Protestant children in parochial schools on a space available basis. That system expects the parents to be involved as in what days will you be here to help. I'm closing in on 50 in December. Most people on this list are just plain interested in how things work. Some student with a head full of mush often doesn't even have a clue about what he or she wants to do. From some of the political posts on this group (yes, I'm one of them) there must be quite a few people that are interested in the history of our country and how our system was formed. To some degree, elite is over rated, elite imho is often just keeping the riffraff out. Ever wonder why the rich and famous eat at very expensive places? Because you and I, the common people, won't be there. The same thing follows in many cases for 'prestigious' schools. I'm not saying schools such as Yale and Harvard do not offer quality education but I am noting that alumni, expecially well heeled alumni can get their kid in based on dad's wallet and not based on the kids merrits. Maybe we should all apply for honorary PhDs... I'd like to have a BS or BA. Wouldn't make me smarter but my salary range would improve. Wes |

Ah, I don't know about that. The only one of those I got wrong was #35, which is something that slipped past me in school, I guess. The rest are pretty straightforward facts even if some are a little obscure. That is *not* the only one I got wrong on the test, however.
