Can 1/2" schedule 40 steel pipe be used for hydraulics up to 2000psi?

Welded black iron from Home Depot? Chances are it wouldn't burst, but
I wouldn't consider it safe, and the usual cast iron fittings are
right out.

Mcmaster Carr has a very nice selection of hydraulic rated pipe.

The rule is schedule # times allowed stress divided by 1000;
schedule 40 with 6000 psi steel = 240 psi

For hydraulic systems, usually ASTM 120 is specified, it'll take
well over 2000 psi with no difficulty.

Standard black iron (gas) pipe is rated at 300psi. If you bought it at
Home Depot or equivalent, assume it is gas pipe. As others mentioned,
you can buy the same sizes with hydraulic pressure ratings from a good
steel supplier. Be prepared to spend the money.

Hey Mark,

No. Maximum working pressure for 1/8" up to 1" using seamless or
continuous weld pipe is 700PSI, and even then anything over 300PSI you
must use steel rather than cast iron fittings.

Thanks all I am building a log splitter and thought I would use my
pipe threading kit and 1/2" pipe instead of getting hoses made. I'll
get the hoses I guess.

I'm sure the previous posters are correct; just don't ask any farmers.

If you have a Tractor Supply Company or similiar company they have premade
hoses that are pretty inexpensive. You might also try Northern Hydraulics.
Premade hoses tend to be a lot cheaper than custom made.
