Default OT mobile digital video recorder info/newsgroups

hey,
i profusely apologize for yet another OT post. i was wondering if i could
tap in to the collective consciousness here and ask if anyone knows where i
could read up on MOBILE digital video recorders ("mobile DVR"). (example on
eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...DME:B:EF:US:11
) are there any discussion groups where i could learn more about which one
to buy? or not to buy? (i looked on the newsgroups but couldn't find a
specific "DVR" discussion group, maybe there's another associated group with
a title that i'm not aware of.)

(last night as i was driving home on I-84 (east) some douchebag just barely
missed clipping me in the rear as he blasted past squeezing between me and
another guy (who was IN the passing lane) who was just about to pass me.
i'm absolutely sick and tired of that bull****, second time this has
happened. i want to get these arseholes on video and turn them in.)

b.w.

there've been discussions on this group before about shop security
camera/recorders, wondered if maybe someone knows about the subject and/or
maybe people would be interested in these compact 12v. dvr recorders.

I have a bit of knowledge that might help - I own two little mp4 gadgets
and have looked at the specs of a bunch more.

You have four major characteristics to work with:

a) storage method and capacity
b) video size
c) framerate
d) video in/out

You probably could get what you need (vga, 30fps, 1-2gb, external video
input) from a number of arrangements, but it may be a bit of roll-yer-own,
soldering cables and making some simple power supply stuff. Under $500
easy.

The way I'd work it would be a single camera per recorder - one of the JXD
or Mobibox SD card mp4 recorder/players; you can, if you look around, get
RCA-connector (analog video) vga webcams for about $25. 2gb could get
whole your drive home/to work. After starting the car, you'll have to
fiddle with them to start them recording, but that's four or five
button-pushes.

Mount the cameras front and back; mount the mp4 units somewhere so you can
pull the SD cards out; when you get there if nothing happened, erase them.
If there's anything of interest, pull them out.

HD mp4 units are out there but they are more expensive, fragile and sort of
overkill - do you *need* 40 hours of video?
