grinding wheels for 10 inch baldor grinder

I just bought a nice used baldor 10 inch grinder (3PH). It came with some
well used 8 inch wheels. Looking for advice on what kind of grinding wheels
to put on it. I will use it mostly for grinding HSS toolbits.

I think this grinder came out of a school, so they may have put 8 inch
wheels on it just for economy or they may have desired a lower surface
speed. One person recommend a 10 inch wheel for roughing and an 8 inch wheel
for finishing.

When it comes to grinding wheels I belive it buying the right one the
first time. It does not pay to skimp.

thanks

I use 46 grit K grade 32A and 60 grit K grade 32A pink aluminum oxide wheels
on my Baldor, which is used almost exclusively for sharpening HSS. The hard
gray wheels that were on it didn't work well with HSS. Remember, the softer
the material, the harder the wheel and vise versa.

I would go with a rougher wheel on one side, probably 36grit grey alum
oxide and a white alum oxide 80grit for finish grinding. I also like
the SG blue wheels but I can't find them in 10" for bench grinders.
Unless you want to make up an adapter for a 3" center :-( They work
really well on drills and HSS tools. You also want to make up some kind
of ,ount/guide so you can use a diamond dresser on the wheels to give
you a smooth flat surface. I picked up a Lee Valley tool rest years
ago, its very adjustable and comes witha slide you can clamp tools into.
