Changing stud gear on a 16 inch South Bend

What is the proper way to change the Quick change stud gear from 24 to 48 or
vice versa on a South bend 16 inch lathe?

It probably sounds like a dumb question, but I don't want to strip any
gears or install something backwards. I have all the south bend books but
none go into any detail.
