notion of terrorism as a lethal threat to America had no force, even
after the assassination of the radical Rabbi Kahane (New York, 1990),
the first bombing of the World Trade Centre (1993) and the deadly
attacks on America embassies, citizens and military abroad - all
carried out by Islamists. The American eagle was in ostrich mode.

Before 9-11, no politician could do anything at all to protect the US
from Moslem fanatics. The press was against it and most people were
not aware, or did not take the threat seriously.

Clinton *might* have been able to do something, but it would have been
an enormous gamble for him with next to no payoff. Success would have
made the threat disappear and there would have been no way to convince
people who wish to believe there was no threat that there really was a
threat.

You have no idea how much it pains me to say something in Clintons
defence.

in the abscence of any WMDs, and anything to link Iraq to 9/11 or terrorism,
then the reasons for the war would seem to be purely economic and political!

Politicians could have done a lot to protect us from 9-11;
*By NOT (federally) disarming the pilots a month before 9-11
* By continuing previous federal policy that required pilots to be armed
if they were carrying the mail
*By not reducing airlind security by removing arms carried by passengers

Or do you think 9-11 would have been possible if the pilots (and

Interesting part in clarke's book, apparently the FBI was behind this.
They insisted the small FAA contingent of armed marshals be eliminated.
FBI was afraid their own hostage rescue team would come in on
a scene where the FAA marshals were already in place and there would
be friendly fire.

As clarke pointed out, the plane had to land first before the FBI
hostage team could show up in it.

In retrospect this was an amazingly moronic error by FBI director
Freeh, one that a grade school child could identify. Not his only
one either.
