printer axles for metalworking projects?

Hi all

Just discovered a small shop where they take apart printers, photocopiers
and stuff like that and sell the parts, so have an assortment of nice
looking axles in sizes from 3/16" to more than 1/2". Would these be
adecuate for machine construction, Gingery type?

Comments thanked in advance

regards,

Mongke

A couple of shafts I took from HP printers
cut nicely with a hacksaw and HSS tools
on my lathe.

All of the printers I have scavenged have been metric, if that matters. I
have a bunch of nice 12mm shafts, and even though I live in Canada where
supposedly we are 'metrified', it's hard to find metric bushings etc... But
for sure these would make reasonable linear motion slides for a smaller
machine. I have a few in a grinding jig (sliding table thing) project.

All kinds of goodies: shafts, bearings, gears, clips, belts, pulleys.

Problem is finding what you need without disassembling a truckload of this
stuff or becoming a neurotic junk-collector.
