Enco has the Phase II piston-type AXA on sale for 90 bucks, and I'm
tempted. This is a luxury purchase for me, as I already have a couple
decent tool posts, but no quick-change. Should I jump on it or keep
waiting for a better deal?

Thanks!

Jim

Once you have the tool post you won't believe that you ever functioned
without it. It will redefine rigidity in your set-ups. Your increase in
productivity and your change in philosophy will amaze you. OK, that might
be a little thick... How about: If my toolpost disappeared, I would sell
something or borrow the cash for a new one that day!

Now, you have restarted the on-going debate about piston vs. wedge
types...these guys have WAY too much time on their hands.

That's the whole set with some toolholders, right? I passed up a used wedge
type Aloris (no toolholders) at a recent auction when the bidding went to
$85. Of course it's always hard to tell how high the other guy was going to
go, I might have been able to get it for $95, which would have been a good
deal. I've seen them go in the $150 range and they always seem to bring
pretty good money on ebay.

I would not call it a luxury, I could not live without mine. I just
wish I had bought one years ago. You can also get free shipping on
that but I don't have the code. I am sure someone does though and will
post it.

You'll have to machine the t-nut to fit your compound as it comes as a
blank threaded rectangular piece. It was my first upgrade on my 9"
South Bend. I bought mine from Enco (piston type). I've kept an eye on
them on E-bay and don't remember any better deal. Also, Enco is
offering free shipping this month if you give the promotional code of
NRS34 when ordering.....

Youdaman, Dave. Thanks for the code. I guess it's time to spring for it.

In answer to the question somebody else asked, yes, it comes with five
holders: Styles 1, 2, 4, 7, and 10. The wedge type is also on sale for
$160, but at the AXA size, I think the $70 is worth more than the
difference I could expect between the two types. (G)

Cheers!

I have an Aloris wedge type and also a piston type, and to be quite
honest, there is not a nickels worth of difference in repeatability or
use between the two. Both are fine. I bought the wedge tyupe new, and
bought the piston type used. Origionally I was told the piston type
are prone to slipping and all kids of other fallicies, which just are
not true. If I had it to do all over again I would save the extra
money differences and buy more tooling and be just as satisfied. I can
use either on my lathe and unless I physically look to see what one
was on the lathe I would not be able to tell.

Regards

I just finished building the toolpost referred to on this website:

http://www.rt66.com/~hypoxic/tool_post/toolpost.html

....took some time to do, and I still don't have all the toolholders I need
(I've made 4 so far), but I don't see how I could possibly go back to life
without it. Relatively fun project too..

...at $90 for a piston type, you'll save a little by building one yourself.
I had to buy the dovetail cutter, which I think was something like $30 and
the rest of the materials didn't amount to much.....but perhaps more
importantly you might wind up with something better than the piston post
enco is offering, and you can customize it to suit your needs. So far, even
though I am a total hack and screw up 1/2 the stuff I make, I'm really
thrilled with the results using it....

Hi Jim,

I just bought this toolpost a couple weeks ago. Spent a little time
machine the t-nut to fit my Atlas 10". Seems to work great. Totally
happy with the purchase.
