FOLLOWUP -- Electric or science toy kits that are decent
 
How about a tiny Unimat lathe. It runs n D cell batts has a little
milling attachment and 3 jaw chuck, also works as a jigsaw and faceplate
sander, you can turn wood plastic and light cuts in alu.
