Global Warming hits the Eastcoast !
Looks like Global Warming has really taken it's toll on the East Coast
today. I hope the liberals at large have lots of fun shoveling this Gloabl Warming trend. Broke records in NYCity's Central Park and closed all the major airports. Heard Boston got more of this Global Warming ! I'll take the 10 degree above normal Januarary we had. Oh sorry forgot, Global Warming caused this blizzard shutting down the liberal bastion of the US. Keep Shoveling Libs, keep shoveling.... |

The government was gonna be shut down tomorrow for Prez day anyway, so no loss to the country. As for VP shooting a lawyer, I can envision the next Saturday Night Live skit... "so who wants to go quail hunting?" and the room clears. And Dan Quail goes into hiding snicker |

Then, the actual causes of it divides them (the believers) even more. Your post is mere anecdotal information (just a tiny drop in a huge bucket). Global warming discussed here will not yield any useful conclusion. There are few here who really understand the phenomenon, at any significant level (I include myself). |

'Global Warming' is a misnomer. 'Climate change' is more accurate. Despite overall temps rising this doesn't prevent icy temps sometimes as well. Anyway - what's so surprising about snow in winter ? Global Warming hits the Eastcoast !
That storm that hit the East coast was from Africa - across the tropics (Normal)
and then it hooked west of Mexico and started a retrograde in a North East direction. Storms like this have been coming through Texas and hitting the East coast for decades. Texas gets some of the best rain off the Mexican Desert during winter. The Summer time is rain time for most of Texas - I get rain every month - but not much this last year, but has returned to normal the last couple of months. I have seen "global warming" survive the "Blizzard of 1996" that officially dumped slightly over 30 inches onto Philadelphia - whose previous record since 1875 was 22.3 inches (set in 1983). And I somewhat remember Boston breaking a snowfall record last winter... They had a storm to match or slightly outdo two 1977 ones that then set new single-storm snowfall records in Boston! And how about that "Blizzard of 1993" - some locations hit by that one had records broken, including a new record of 10 inches in Birmingham and Syracuse NY breaking its previous record set by the "Great Blizzard of 1888". Looks like some recent record-big blizzards did not stop the world from having its hottest year on record as a continuation of a recent-decades upward trend, and less lignificantly the USA from having its hottest January on record - should one more blizzard make much difference? - Don Klipstein ) |

Just for those that don't know History - Geologic history or have logic.
We are still retreating from the last ice age. There have been years without summer and years without winter. Those were 1880's as an example. Global warming does not necessarily imply less snow, since warmer air holds more moisture than colder air, allowing it to deliver more snow. Only when global warming brings a particular location above the freezing point, does it imply rain instead of snow. Expect places that normally have had dry, cold winters to have warmer winters with lots more snow. Till it gets lots warmer. |

There's a lot more energy tied up in seawater than the atmosphere. Note also that Katrina was as bad as it was due to higher sea temps in the Atlantic and Gulf that also ensured that the air was moisture-laden thus helping to increase the severity of the Hurricane. Global Warming hits the Eastcoast !
Yeah, I am a little behind the times (Climate Change terminology being
in Vouge). On a serious note, this summer I read an article on automobile registration in the USA. In 1975 (year I graduated from High School) there were roughly 130 million cars registered. Today it is around 280 million cars (I may be off on these numbers slightly). Anyway, if you remember, cars ran at 160 degree F back then and today they run at 200 degree F. They also have that hot little catalytic converter. I truly believe, the doubling of cars (with catalytic converters) and the 25 % increase in engine temperature must have some effect on the atmosphere. I know this has been kicked around but the article really opened my eyes to the heat generated by cars. I guess this is a case of fixing one problem and creating another. Take Care ...... |

Improved mpg results in lower thermal pollution. Graham |

That calculation will hint at the utility of "No science involved, just common sense." John |

Graham , Jim & John
Sorry for being rude and ignorant. This thread is really going all kinds of places, which makes debate interesting as these Off Topic subjects often do. I have a lot of respect for you Engineers and don't have the brain power to compete (I'm a lowly tech !). In the last 25 years I've noticed some things and have pointed them out in this thread. Yes, we may be having an overall warming of our climate but we just broke records with this snowfall. Maybe the cars have nothing to do with it, maybe they do. Maybe the banning of pesticides has brought back migratory birds but has rendered many outdoor activities obsolete. All this in 25 years ! Recycling is a great thing except all the trash blown out of there bins and landing on the side of the road. I do agree we need to do something about pollution and our energy usage (I am playing with a solar heating project this winter). I have always had a 4 cylinder car and didn't get AC until my wife came down with Asthma (smoker) 6 years ago. I think my point is for everything we do there will always be a "bad" side and its a shame it gets so political. So please accept my appollogy for being rude and as Jim wrote "Ignorant". Sorry Jim..... |

"Ignorant" simply means "without knowledge". Heard Boston got more of this Global Warming ! I'll take the 10 degree above normal Januarary we had. Oh sorry forgot, Global Warming caused this blizzard shutting down the liberal bastion of the US. Keep Shoveling Libs, keep shoveling.... No, the blizzard was a government experiment on the east coast population. If you take a snow sample to a lab, they will find an unusual substance. Global warming will resume in a week as scheduled. Yep. And Cheney was practicing up today also ;-) ...Jim Thompson Yeah, with "friends" like that, who the hell needs enemies? [snipped global warming hysteria rants] ... we have concluded that it is best to "play it safe". First, who's "we"? Got a mouse in your pocket? And what, exactly, does "play it safe" mean, when discussing this "global warming" crapola? Curtail all human activity? Make everybody move into caves and become hunter-gatherers? Prohibit combustion? And then, after we've all descended into the savagery that seems to be the Chicken Littles' agenda, what do you recommend that "we" do when it turns out that it hasn't made any difference at all? Is that an experiment we really want to undertake? Thanks, Rich -- "We have met the enemy and he is us." - Pogo Possum |

The sane conclusion therefore is to limit CO2 ( and other greenhouse gas ) emissions since it can at worst do no harm to do so ! Graham Yeah, that's it! Plug up all of the volcanoes! -- Flap! On each of these we have concluded that it is best to "play it safe". "We"?? I am afraid that *I* do not know exactly who "we" are and I do not quite now what "safe" is either, except for simple cause-effect things. There are such things in life as real risk and imagined risk - the problem is that the information processing part of the mind is heavily linked to the emotion system (for speed and efficiency in front of large animals with teeth) so the risk that invokes the most emotion is seen as the larger one even when it is plainly ludicrous. The imagined risk is larger because it has more emotional clout. Behavourial scientists f.ex. have managed to sell more life insurances covering the risk of getting killed in a terrorist attack on an airline than the alternative insurance of dying on an airline (which of course cover terrorism as well as obesity and heart disease i.e. *real* risks with high probabilities). Media these days feed on selling emotion, not information. The same does politicians. Positive feedback is set up. I an few years boredom sets in, emotion dissipates, and "the problem" will disappear. The "war on terror" will go the way of "the war on drugs". "Global Warming" mutates into "Climate Change" and then .... it disappears as no emotional mileage can be gained from it. I give it Five Years, Tops. Unfortunately, while the hysteria may pass, the government agencies go on and on, like a bad penny, or a curse. "The war on drugs" might not be on the top of everybody's terror list, but the DEA is still there, and there are still a lot of people in prison for the "crime" of merely _HAVING_ drugs. And apparently, you're a nonsmoker or don't live in America - the war on smokers is getting more intense day by day - and if there's any unholy jihadish crusade, that's it. But, like all religious cults, their faith overrides any actual scientific fact. That should be obvious - 43% of the citizens still approve of Bush! Does George suck Dick?
