What is Google?
Joe Barta writes:
Somewhere along the line, someone else thought it would also be a groovy idea to gather up all those past USENET discussions, along with all the new ones that are being generated every day, and put them in a big fat searchable database. And then make that database accessible with a web browser. Several years ago there was a website called DejaNews that did just that. I don't know how they did it or if they were the first, but they did it and it was cool. Actually DejaNews didn't attempt to gather Usenet postings from before they existed; they just retained everything posted during their existence. At first they made the whole lot available, then they cut back the free service to just the most recent 6-12 months. I still miss their "one line per article" search result format. As with many things on the web, after a few years it fizzled. They probably ran out of money and they went offline. Fast forward to a couple years ago, and Google announces that they've bought the USENET archive that belonged to DejaNews and soon they will be using their wonderous search technology on all those old discussions and make them accessible from groups.google.com. And then after *that*, they incorporated old articles from several *other* archives -- ones that had never been publicly available -- thus providing content (although with some gaps in coverage) from as far back as 1981, just 2 years after the start of Usenet. -- Mark Brader, Toronto | "It is one thing to praise discipline, and another | to submit to it." -- Miguel de Cervantes, 1613 My text in this article is in the public domain. |

Item 570 is a form for hammering copper sheet, reposse. I haven't been able to confirm any of the guesses on this one so far, but I'll add yours to the list. Rob |

Wrong, google Groups -is- a browser. I am using it right now to post this message. But I much prefer Agent as it has spell check and kill files capability. Huh? Internet Explorer is a browser. The device is filled with rarefied gas, and the HV supply goes to that metal cap, and it lights up like a neon lamp, tingles a little where the fingers are dragged over the skin, and makes ozone. ;-) Google "violet wand"--there is one site that has an animation of that particular type of tube in operation. According to J. Clarke :
Gary wrote: Wrong, google Groups -is- a browser. I am using it right now to post this message. But I much prefer Agent as it has spell check and kill files capability. Huh? Internet Explorer is a browser. Netscape is a browser. Konqueror is a browser. Google is a _server_, not a _browser_. More specifically, Google is a *web* server (HTTP protocol), not even a "news" (usenet) server (NNTP protocol). Many web browers have the capability to talk the NNTP protocol, and POP protocol (one of the e-mail protocols), but Google does *not* serve newsgroups in that way. It serves them up as web pages, through what *I* find to be a terrible user interface. Agent is also not a browser, it is a "newsreader", which is slightly different from the portal access called "Google Groups" provided via the Google server. And -- it is much *better* at being a newsreader than the web browers which include NNTP protocol capabilities. I don't use it, simply because I don't allow a Windows box which I may own to talk to the net. So -- I use common free source newsreaders written for unix systems (which is where usenet news got its start, anyway, so the unix newsreaders have had plenty of time to get to be very good at what they do. OK, Google iGroups is a news reader not a browser. I can read and post to news groups with it. I don't like it much compared to Agent but it was all I had for a while. It does have one feature I wish Agent had in that it makes a list of groups you have posted to so you can check on responses or rude replies. Any more nit picking? |
