how to sharpen mini dike cutters, nipper cutters?
Alan Horowitz wrote: how to sharpen the mini dike cutters and nipper cutters used in electrical & electronic work? They're too small to handle with jigs, and the blades don't even open very widely. Yet, their utility is directly proportional to how recently they've been sharpened/honed. I have tried to do this with swiss files and small pocket sharpening stones. it really isn't worth the trouble, and they never work as well as a good new cutter. Yes, I hate to throw them away, too. But, I have bought some good Xcelite and other cutters that have served me well for years in light production work. I don't cut drill bits with them, however. |

This is yet another wonderful application for a 1" belt sander. They're too small to handle with jigs, and the blades don't even open very widely. Yet, their utility is directly proportional to how recently they've been sharpened/honed. If they're too far gone, get out your hardfacing rod and weld new area to sharpen. Should I have welded the two sides separately? ;-) |

NOT crossposted to 5 groups you don't think that this subject would elicit interesting and useful comments from (for example) folks who hang out in sci.electronics.repair? they use these electronic tools more often than machinists do, methinks. the newsgroups were not chosen at random. Half an hour was spent selecting which groups should be included. the internet is not just a substitute for bulletin boards.... it is about thinking outside the box, and cross-fertilization. anyway, for me (merchant marine engineer), the post was not a theoretical question. when an engine-control is down, I don't have the luxury of sifting through boxes and boxes of tools - I use what's at hand. If a good pair of nippers thereby gets ruined, I can't just sent wifey out to Home depot to buy another pair. I must sharpen it. |

They're too small to handle with jigs, and the blades don't even open very widely. Yet, their utility is directly proportional to how recently they've been sharpened/honed. I sharpen for a living. My advice is to do them by hand with a diamond file such as an ez-lap Grinding takes off too much material too quickly and you never get them to meet just right. This is exactly the way I do mine when I need to. The little stamped flush-cutters are iffy for resharpening, my larger ones I've done a couple of times. I've inherited a bunch of large side-cutters that I use for rough work(big wire, not PC boards), they're Kleins and they really aren't worth trying to sharpen. A diamond hone cuts fast enough on the smaller ones. You just have to have an eye(and hand) to get the angles right. Stan |

I've come to the same conclusion. A good pair of mini-dikes is worth the
investment, so much so that I asked my wife to get me a Xcelta pair of flush cutters for Christmas -- they were about $70. I've pitched the Xcelite ones. After a year or so they are just shot. Trim one more about 1/4" 'closer' than they did, especially if they had left only 1/8" of nail. wink - Yea, though I walk through the valley of Minwax, I shall stain no Cherry. http://diversify.com |

The fact that they were more expensive will force me to be more careful.
I dropped my Excellites on the concrete floor and they never aligned correctly again. My best pair which I bought in 1978 succombed to my children who must have used them to cut coathangers -- these were $40 or so back 25 years ago! You need good flush cutting diagonal cutters for printed circuit board work. Jack "Loren Coe" wrote in message news:j2mIb.705017$Fm2.607042@attbi_s04... They just seem to keep their edge for a long time. I've got cutters from
Lindstrom, Svantek, and others. They are all in the 50 to 70 dollar range. They are worth the price. Pete Loren Coe wrote in message news:j2mIb.705017$Fm2.607042@attbi_s04...
