NOT crossposted to 5 groups you don't think that this subject would elicit interesting and useful comments from (for example) folks who hang out in sci.electronics.repair? they use these electronic tools more often than machinists do, methinks. the newsgroups were not chosen at random. Half an hour was spent selecting which groups should be included. the internet is not just a substitute for bulletin boards.... it is about thinking outside the box, and cross-fertilization. anyway, for me (merchant marine engineer), the post was not a theoretical question. when an engine-control is down, I don't have the luxury of sifting through boxes and boxes of tools - I use what's at hand. If a good pair of nippers thereby gets ruined, I can't just sent wifey out to Home depot to buy another pair. I must sharpen it. |

My advice is to do them by hand with a diamond file such as an ez-lap Grinding takes off too much material too quickly and you never get them to meet just right. This is exactly the way I do mine when I need to. The little stamped flush-cutters are iffy for resharpening, my larger ones I've done a couple of times. I've inherited a bunch of large side-cutters that I use for rough work(big wire, not PC boards), they're Kleins and they really aren't worth trying to sharpen. A diamond hone cuts fast enough on the smaller ones. You just have to have an eye(and hand) to get the angles right. Stan |

investment, so much so that I asked my wife to get me a Xcelta pair of flush cutters for Christmas -- they were about $70. I've pitched the Xcelite ones. After a year or so they are just shot. The fact that they were more expensive will force me to be more careful.
I dropped my Excellites on the concrete floor and they never aligned correctly again. My best pair which I bought in 1978 succombed to my children who must have used them to cut coathangers -- these were $40 or so back 25 years ago! They just seem to keep their edge for a long time. I've got cutters from
