Where are all these mythical people? I have a friend who ............ my
brother-in-law ......... my neighbor .......... etc.

Why don't we hear directly from them on metalworking subjects?

Why don't we hear the words "I" and "me" more often? Like "I" can do, and
"I" did, and "I" made?

If these people are welding underwater in the North Sea making $900 an hour,
why can't they afford a computer? If they are doing so well at
metalworking, why is it that they are so ethereal?

I can understand why anyone working on nuclear subs, or NASA wouldn't post,
or who has or has had a clearance, and those bound by nondisclosure
agreements, but why not all the rest of these other mythical beings?

Just some thoughts from the fringe ................. As I get older, I
ponder more things .........

Could it be because they have no interest in posting in general, or RCM

It's pretty simple----it's not everyone's cup of tea, and even when it is,

You want something beyond ethereal? The fellow of whom I spoke in a

Do you routinely discuss work at the "missile facility" online? You might
want to refer to your security clearance, (that thing they gave you after
the thorough background investigation by the FBI) or the nondisclosure
agreement you signed. People who work at such facilities are forbidden from
engaging in such discussions, and are instructed to report anyone who
pressures them for information or asks inappropriate questions. Even those
performing menial unskilled work. They are never to discuss what they did,
job title, job description, duties, where they worked, their hours, people
they worked with, scheduling, what they saw, anything that has to do with
that job or area. There is place for violators, and it is (or used to be)
in Leavenworth, Kansas. Blabbermouths can also lose pension and benefits.

But you knew that already, right?

Harold and Steve,

You both seem like decent guys with a genuine interest in metalwork. But
it seems that you've got involved in one of those little feuds which can
only occur online. One thinks the other has imaginary friends, and the
other thinks the first is some kind of troll. What does it matter? If
you met in real life most likely everything would be fine. Why not crack
open a few beers and forget about it?

Close, but no cigar. We were trained at what was, then, Sperry Utah
Engineering Laboratories, located near the airport in Salt Lake City. It
was later to be known as Univac, Unisys, and other variations. Don't know
what they're called today.

I left the facility in '65, so I don't really think I'm much of a threat to
national security, considering the Sergeant Missile is nothing more than a
glowing memory now, and Sperry went out of the missile business shortly
after I departed, due to the missile being badly outdated and the contracts
coming to an end. After all, it was a product of the 50's.

As far as I know, the missile was never used, although many were fired in
training. Somewhere in my boxes of stored items I have an outstanding
picture of one leaving the launcher.

In your experiences, did you make the acquaintance of Ross Eskelson?
(Thiokol, as I recall, but he was employed at Sperry at one time).

I downloaded and unzipped it. 9 jpgs of a big chunk
of AL being transformed into an aerospace part. A
couple of the pictures are quite nice. No executables,
no risk in opening the zip.

You need not be afraid of opening a zip file as long
as your system is configured *not* to execute files

Do you routinely discuss work at the "missile facility" online? You might
want to refer to your security clearance, (that thing they gave you after
the thorough background investigation by the FBI) or the nondisclosure
agreement you signed. People who work at such facilities are forbidden

I routinely discuss work at the missile facilities that I worked at.
No big deal. When you work at a missile facility, you get a security
clearance. Along with the clearance you learn what is classified and
what is not. Most of it is not. Some things are classified and you
just don't discuss those unless the person has a need to know. It does
not matter if they are cleared.

Although I am retired, last year I worked part time at the local
missile facility. They did not bother to got my security clearance
updated, so I was working there without a clearance. It generally was
not a problem, but it did mean that I had to be escorted when I was in
the area from which missile tests were run, and I could not be in the
area while the tests were being run. But there was no problem getting
into the Missile Assembly Building. Even less problem getting into the
area where all the machine shop equipment is located.
You don't have to have an explosive cert. to get in there.

I don't know what Steve's background is, but I suspect he has no real
experience with security clearances and the rules governing classified work.
Certainly there are some "black programs" that one is never permitted to
acknowledge or discuss, but those are very few. The vast majority of
classified facilities have no blanket "gag order" that prevents one from
acknowledging one's employment there, or even one's basic job description.

majority of classified facilities have no blanket "gag order" that
prevents one from acknowledging one's employment there, or even one's
basic job description.

I guess all they told us in briefings at the Nevada Test Site was just BS,
then.

No, that could definitely be one of the black programs. Certainly, some
parts of it would be.

I have friends who are into various trades, crafts, hobbies, etc. that could
make great contributions to this and other groups. The thing is most are
older; or back-to-the-landers; a little off center politically /
philosophically; etc., that for one reason or the other won't / don't own
computers and wouldn't touch one if you gave them one. The ones that do
have'em usually just do email with family.

One of them has a few useful although [not-commercially successful]
inventions to his name. He has a an old 80386 computer that he runs Linux on
but he won't use the da_ _ thing for anything except keeping his records on
and an old Cad program. He's been using it for years, even taking some CAD
classes at the nearby University, but refuses to hook it to the internet.

Out here in the boonies, many of these guys could give the Mel Gibson
character in "Conspiracy Theory" a good run for their money, as far as
mistrust of the internet and the government goes.

One of my "buds" has a pool going on his shop wall about when Bush/Cheney is
going to declare martial law and purposely tank the economy so they can set
up their one world government with the other Bilderberger Group-ers.

I just put an extra layer of tin foil inside of my Manitowoc hat when I go
down there. I don't want any of those stray alien rays to penetrate while
I'm that close to them.

FWIW,

HAT

Oh, I had feet. But by the time I got through all that snow, glass and
salt, they'd blued and worn off down to nubs.

The Monty Python skit with the guys sitting around the Yacht Club
talking about how hard they had it as kids was great. I don't recall
if that was on an album or just a Flying Circus skit, but it was well
done. This thread reminds me of it for some reason.

I guess I just didn't understand the level of horror to which you had been
exposed. Must have been hell.

It almost makes you wonder if maybe all of it isn't just plain old BS!

Not a chance.

It's a good thing they grew back that next spring.

Funny you should mention that, Larry.

When I read this amazing story in yesterday's Boston Globe I got
"ferklempt" (choked up) just thinking about what amazing spirit this
young guy has and how damn proud his parents must be of him:
