Steel supplier in Western suburbs of Chicago?

Good people there. Not sure if they are open Saturdays though, as we use them for my company during the week. Worth a call if your interested. They are near Randolph and Ogden. Wow, that's close to me. I just make orders with a chassis builder for a
discount we split. I'll have to check them out. Do you want maybe a chance to try some tig work on my gear I have pretty much everything up and running. I'm in the Loop. This is PERFECT for me. I called them and the person on the phone was very nice. They open at 6am, which is very helpful. They can order hot rolled steel for me, takes a couple of days. I told them that I am just an amateur with a garage, not some big shot, and he said that he was fine with that. I need some idea of what is good prices. Say, how much is a sensible price to pay for 1.5" (for a greenhouse) and 3" (for trailer) angle iron or a 4" I beam (for generator frame)? thanks!!!! i -- |

Places like that are much better for supplying a few inches of stock for a project and probably prohibitively expensive for the size and quantity of metal that would be needed to build a trailer. For medium quantities (1, 3, or 6 foot lengths) I buy from McMaster-Carr, which usually ships from Elmhurst, IL. Their prices are probably a little high, but they'll usually deliver within two days and I'm pretty sure that the Will Call desk is open on Saturday mornings. Enco's prices are usually better for mail order, but the selection is much more limited. There are also a couple of scrap yards near me (a bit west of you) that have been good for accumulating various odd stock if you don't mind mystery metal. If you want more commercial sources for larger stock, email me and I will see who the shop at work (Lemont, IL) buys from. Mike |

Just the same, it's easy enough to check their prices online. |

I found that the springs that were on a Plymouth Voyager axel were way too soft for my 5 x 9 homemade trailer. A set of 3000 lb springs & shackles was under $40 at Northern Tool. |

That's about 45c/lb. 20 foot is standard length. If you only want 10 feet, they may charge a different rate and they'll probably charge for the cut. If you go in person, sometimes you can find "drops" that they'll sell for the same per/lb rate as standard lengths. |
