Default Pimp my scale or:The YADRO-Files, part 1

Hi!

I thought you might be interested in this:
I bought a el cheapo digital scale and played a bit with it. I have
found a simple way to get some more modes out of it.

This is only the first part of a longer (also in means of time) project.

I _guess_ that all have them. The chip will be the same, they do have an
application note with PCB-layout to copy from. Like the Japanes in the
60's: Copy, copy, clone.

Nifty reverse engineering, Nick. Very enjoyable reading.

BTW, when you wrote [the "YADRO"-emiga.] I think you might have meant to
spell the english word 'enigma'.

Every time I see the word enigma I'm reminded of the electromechanical
cipher machine of that name used by Germany during WWII. There's a
pretty good description of it he

Yes, that's how I wanted to write it.

That's why I used the word. :-)

Thanks for your comments!

Greetings Nick,
I tried to get that button working on some scales that have virtually
identical circuit boards. Thanks for the pointer. I soldered together
the two pads you mentioned and now my scales work the same way.
However, there is another way to get there. The three circuit board
traces, Data, Clock, and Battery Positive can be switched together in
certain sequences to put the scale in different modes. These are
described below.

NEW SCALE FUNCTION TABLE
D=Data trace
C=Clock trace
+=Positive battery trace
The Data Port Traces are, from the left, Battery negative, Data,
Clock, Battery positive.
Only the Data, Clock, and Battery positive are used to switch modes.
Two switches and two 1K resistors are needed. One switch connects the
Data trace to + through a 1K resistor. The other switch connects the
clock trace to + through a 1K resistor.
When a new battery is put in scale it will be in NORMAL MODE.

WITH SCALE IN NORMAL MODE
Press:
C once to zero display
D once to hold display and put scale into Hold Mode
D twice & C once to put scale in Negative Max Mode (Press D once to
return to Normal Mode)
D thrice & C once to put scale in Positive Max Mode (Press D once to
return to Normal Mode)
WITH SCALE IN HOLD MODE
Press:
C once to put scale in Fast Read Mode. Display will show: INC.
Pressing C toggles between Hold Mode and Fast Read Mode.
D thrice to return scale to Normal Mode
WITH SCALE IN FAST READ MODE
Press:
C once to put scale in Hold Mode
D once to put scale in Normal Mode
MODES
Normal Mode: Display updates slowly & either in or mm is shown.
Hold Mode: Freezes value on display, H is shown.
Fast Read Mode: Display updates rapidly, INC is shown.
Negative Max Mode: Shows maximum value in the negative direction.
Positive Max Mode: Shows maximum value in the positive direction.
MAX MODES:
Pressing C toggles scale between Max Mode and Hold Mode. It also shows
the present position of the read head. For example: If scale is put
into Positive Max Mode then the display will only show values greater
than the value shown when the scale was put into Positive Max Mode.
If the read head is moved and C is pressed once the display will now
be in Hold Mode. Then, if C is pressed again the display will show the
actual value of the scale position, whether positive or negative. The
scale will still be in Positive Max Mode and will now show any value
greater than the new starting point. All the values shown will be
absolute values.

That's fine if it helped someone.

But I have described this. OK, just in two sentences, so I will have to
emphasize it. I'll do that.

MAX MODES:

[snipp]
There seems to be one more mode. Will have to check, whether my scale
has the same functionality.
