Careful there, Strap. You wanna get nominated for an IGGY?

Just FTW, I read Bob's message as if it were aimed at you, too, Ned.
I'm glad you two kissed and made up, though. wink

Sounds like someone needs education. :-)
Physics is the basis for Science. EE and ME are practical applications of Physics in real life.
Note: Psychology and Biology are not pure science. To many 'I feels'.

I believe with all false modesty that it's generally easier for a EE to
understand and analogize (izzat a word?) to things mechanical than it is
for someone from the nuts and bolts side to do in the opposite direction.

Perhaps true if you limit yourself to the sorts of subjects
that typically pop up here, but you need only look back at
some of the previous threads on thermodynamics and the
behavior of compressible fluids to find a counterexample.

Hey, who brought physics into this? I never liked the stuff, and now
with string theory and all that new guff it's more of an insider's game
than the petroleum market. I'll to stick with electronics and mechanical
stuff and leave physics to the profs.

Physics? What would you have all us MEs do after our second
semester (besides party and whore around) if we left thermo
and all that follows to the physicists?

Even Steven Hawkings, In an interview I just read in the latest issue of
Discover magazine, said that he's changed his mind and given up thinking
man will ever find a unified theory. He said something to the effect
that it would remove the thrill of the challenge if we did. :-)

Sounds like sour grapes to me g.

Read it again, Dave. Readers were merely invited to consider the
possibility and form their own opinions. The subject line even ends
in a question mark.

I later acknowledged that concensus of responding posts was that it
was not a troll.

The label "unworthy" is yours. I did not use that term. I did
suggest that I thought it lazy to ask what a datasheet says rather
than read the one he said he had but hadn't read. I later
acknowledged that my reaction is my problem. I even encouraged
continued participation in Ig's project by any and all who might enjoy
doing so.

There ya go! I missed on first scan of that site that he uses a
buzzbox as a welding power source. It looks like this guy's design
goal is the same as yours.

Good luck! No sarcasm, I really mean that. Let us know how it works
if/when you get it up and running.

I'm pretty sure it was Norman Yarvin. But I also found a

that explains the behavior of tires? g

LOL. Thermodynamics is science.

Tires are *art*. You won't find a book like
that about tires. :^)

OK, I'm simmered down. Opinions noted, some good points made.

LOL at Ned Simmons' post. Right on, Ned! I recall that thread.
Guess what EE bought a copy of Fermi's book on thermodynamics -- and
is still reading it a bit at a time? That book was really a find,
thanks to whomever suggested it. (Ned?)

Entropy? Go strip down, stand in front of a mirror, and give yourself
a few strokes. Memorize that picture, then recall one of yourself
doing the same thing at age 17. THAT, dear boy, is entropy. It's often
accompanied by severe melancholy.

Now how about a book that explains the behavior of tires? g

"The Secret Life of a Bandag", perhaps? Or Conceptual Zen Biking on
http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/humor/air.htm , maybe? (I tend to
believe in the cat-sucking theory, myself.)

OK, Don, don't get your undies in a bundle.

I later acknowledged that concensus of responding posts was that it

Fair enough.

The label "unworthy" is yours. I did not use that term.

Please notice that I didn't put that word, or any of it, in quotes. It
was pretty clear that that's my interpretation of the message, from
whoever wrote it (apparently you).

I did
suggest that I thought it lazy to ask what a datasheet says rather

Apparently "lazy" and "unworty" aren't equivalent in this context for
you. See prior statement undie bundlage.

I don't think he was trolling. From time to time, I have to fix 60 KW
induction heat treaters that have IGBT's in them. I'm not sure how he
is going to deal with things like a stuck electrode and such.

It appears that willingness and eagerness to help must now be tempered
with a degree of skepticism on this n.g. I'm sorry to see that.
I've been here since Altovoz days. I have a pretty high tolerance
for bull****, as long as there are a few I can learn from and a few I
might occasionally help. I have several good friends I found on
this n.g. and several more casual friends that I enjoy corresponding
with from time to time. At least two of those good friends have
abandoned RCM as no longer worth the time to read. I'm glad I got to
know them when I did, and we continue to correspond frequently about
matters of mutual interest.

I have no problem mostly ignoring the political stuff. It's usually
easy to recognize from the subject line. It's no more appropriate in
this forum than dog**** is on a residential sidewalk -- but it
happens, and it's easy enough to avoid.

I suppose I should only be ****ed at me, because I was dumb enough to
get trolled. Whatever. I'm ****ed and disappointed. Things used
to be better on rcm.

I'll get over it, and I'll probably still be around now and then.

Personally, I know little about electronics, and virtually nothing
about semiconductors. The questions I saw out of him in the H-Bridge
thread didn't seem too absurd from my POV, so I think it's possible he's
legitimate. I even read that datasheet* and a good chunk of it goes
over my head to varying degrees. At some parts I'd be inclined to ask,
"So, what does this actually mean in English?"
In any extent, his threads to have a tendency to promote long and
detailed discussions, which I think would be the opposite of what a
troll aims for: a fight.
So, no, I don't believe he's a troll.

BTW, as long as I'm here among some electronics experts, what is a
suggested starting place for someone interesting in learning about
electronics? I have (just by chance; got it for free) "The Art of
Electronics," which I'm just starting to read and right now all I'm
looking to do is put together an ungodly bright white LED light.
