Where does one go to buy copper in sheets? Going to a craft store is way

to
expensive for puny little sheets they sell. Also where can i get some
information on what chemicals interact with copper to change it`s color or
hue? Thanks.
Patt

Check the yellow pages under metals, or try a local roofing or HVAC company.

I got some really nice scrap pieces from a roofing company once. It came in
plain, and "patina'd." I tried to tell him the Antiques Road Show people say
"patinated," but he claimed that was wrong. Anyway, it's a weight that is
easily cut, hammered or bent, and it has been very useful. (And the price
was right.)

Any local sheet metal dealer.
Craft stores rape people on copper sheet.

I bought couple square feet to make a cool looking and durable roof for a bird
feeder a while back, after the local squirrels chewed the hell out of the
original wooden one. IIRC the kid at HD hacked it off of a one foot wide roll of
the stuff with tinsnips.

I patina'd that project by rubbing a little Dunton's Tinner's fluid (soldering
acid) on it, as that was all I had handy. It gave it a great looking weathered
appearance with greenish streaks almost overnight.

For a more recent project I bought a container of "Liver of Sulphur" crystals
from a crafts store. Disolving them in water makes a solution which turns copper
brown about as fast as you can wipe it on the copper surface.

if you are looking for the green patina on copper or brass well the wife
was using some miracle grow plant food and left the bag sitting on the
window sill in the back yard.. the rain got to it and some must have
dripped down onto the copper water pipe with a brass faucet on it.. they
both turned green from the chemicals in the miracle grow plant food.

Recycled beer (or water, milk, juice, etc.) works, too.
It's the uric acid that does the trick.

Most cities have a non ferrous metal dealer. You might even be able to get
it from a sheet metal shop.

Best place to get copper sheet is from roofers. Used on classy houses
for flashings etc, and roofs on bay windows. Some buildings even get
the full copper roof treatment.

If you gave your location, maybe someone could give some better answers.

Source for coppper sheets... find some scrap metal dealers in your
area and go visit in person. You would be surprised at what you can
find. I just missed a very large lot of used copper roofing that had
that really nice shade of green color. It had all been pressed into a
bundle and banded up before I got there!! B.G.
