Default " Technical Video Rental" - anybody rent any of these?

These guys rent videos on a lot of metalworking subjects ($9.99 / week,
including postage both ways). Has anybody rented any and would you
recommend them?

GREAT GUY AND GREAT SERVICE!! I can not say enough about it. I have rented
over 10 videos over the last few years and even when one tape was defective,
he sent a new one free postage both ways.

Great guy and yes.. don't hesitate to do business with him.

Steve: thanks for the kind words!

For the record, I'm not paying Steve anything to shill for me.

(psst...Steve, see me around back for the $20...).

Technical Video Rental is a small family run business. I started it
because I'm interested in metalworking, woodworking, gunsmithing, and
shooting, and because instructional videos on these topics are
expensive.

TVR is in its third year. Its grown hugely since I started it (we've
now got almost 1,000 titles, and $100,000 worth of inventory), but I
still answer every customer email myself, and I try to make every
customer glad they did business with us. When it comes to workshop
stuff, I'm a customer of tools, books, and videos, so I try to always
treat my customers the way I'd like to be treated.

Please give TVR a shot!

Thanks,

I shelled out big dough one time to rent a series of tapes on how to run a power
hammer. Wasn't from you, though. I was hacked when the tapes showed up and they
were crappy copies and I couldn't even figure out what was going on most of the
time. Hope you only handle DVD.

Just because I'm curious, do you have the Clifton Ralph power hammer material on
DVD?

Heh...nice. For the record, anyone who Dillon Precision allows to
advertise in their magazine/newsletter, has got to be good. I'll be
renting from you guys as soon as I have "spare time" (whatever that is).

In other words, if you're good enough that Dillon lets you advertise,
that's good enough of a referral for me!

Dave,

I like the way you think!

I've got two Dillon 1050's in my garage; one set up to reload .40 S&W
for my carry pistol, the other...um...gathering dust right now (but
someday set up for .223).

Both were bought used off (one from a guy at my range, another off
eBay). Dillon is a First Class operation. I bent a decapping pin (my
own fault), Dillon sent me out a spare, and refused to take my money
(even for shipping!). A week later, I bent the NEW decapping pin.
Dillon sent me ANOTHER spare, again free of charge (I tried to pay
them, I swear!).

Dillon's level of customer support is something I aim to emulate in the
way I run Technical Video Rental.

Glad you saw that ad!

Grant,

95% of our inventory is on DVD.

Whenever a customer has a problem with a video's quality (scratches,
etc.), we ship out a new copy, ASAP, by first class mail, and usually
give a 20% rebate on the original copy.

Between cutting the price 20%, and paying for FOUR mailings (there,
back, there#2, back#2), we lose money ... but that's the only way I'd
want to be treated as a customer, so that's how TVR works.

Sorry you had a bad experience with another vendor, but I think you'll
find that we're a lot different.

I don't yet have the Clifton Ralph video (thanks for the suggestion!).

I'll order copies right now. Please send me a note at
, and I'll send you email when the videos
arrive.

Thanks!

I have to admit - that's the way it works, I had one tape arrive with
the first 10 minutes blank. I had a new (and I mean new) tape in
three days. A first class operation.

Thank You.

Yep, I visited your site and just HAD to rent a DVD.

Great stuff! I wish I had enough time (and money!) to rent most of your
library!

I do have one suggestion for your library. There is a "new" way to do
fiberglass work called Vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding. There is
a CD @
http://home.houston.rr.com/pieceofwo...ersion%204.htm

that gives video and graphic details of the process. (In boat building
no less, I see you have some fiberglass boat repair videos already.)

I'm in the process of building a composite airplane and have a area that
I'd love to use this process if I knew the details and felt sure of the
outcome. (Gear box uses 32 ply layups, normally you do 2 - 4 layups and
then let them cure before doing any more for bubble and misalignment
purposes.) I heard you can stack as much glass as you like and get
almost pre-preg results with this process. Only hitch is the cd is $65
and this project is already tapping my resources.

Oh another suggestion. How about rent 4 and get the 5th rental free as
long as you request it with your 4th rental. (No extra postage required
on a 2nd DVD in the same package.)

Thanks

Well, it's true. Similar vendors hang out together, and the reputation
of one reflects on the other. Works both ways, of course.

I've got two Dillon 1050's in my garage; one set up to reload .40 S&W
for my carry pistol, the other...um...gathering dust right now (but

I've got the 650, and hope to buy the casefeeder next. Set up for,
let's see...10 or 12 calibers, I suppose.

Both were bought used off (one from a guy at my range, another off
eBay). Dillon is a First Class operation. I bent a decapping pin (my
own fault), Dillon sent me out a spare, and refused to take my money
(even for shipping!).

Yup, they're like that. Probably doesn't cost them much, and
word-of-mouth referrals that they get from that policy is going to be
nothing but positive. I've yet to hear anyone bitch about anything
meaningful about Dillon presses, except a few people talking about
primer feed problems that I can't find credible. (that mechanism is
pretty foolproof).

A week later, I bent the NEW decapping pin.
Dillon sent me ANOTHER spare, again free of charge (I tried to pay
them, I swear!).

Been there, done that. I did buy a spares kit for my 650, which they do
let you pay for.

Dillon's level of customer support is something I aim to emulate in the
way I run Technical Video Rental.

If you're going to pick a customer service model, that's the one to
shoot for. You know, Dillon has done collaborations with people selling
books and videos before, I wonder if they'd work more closely with you;
use their ordering and payment infrastructure or something? Just a
thought.

Glad you saw that ad!

Well, someone had mentioned you over in rec.woodworking or
rec.metalworking a few months ago, so I filed it as "check this place
out". Then I saw the ad in the Blue Press and it's just a matter of
time. Probably winter when the outside stuff calms down, but I see 8 or
10 on there that I want to use.

Question - how does the whole copyright thing work? Does that even
enter into this, or do you have to pay more for the tapes because you're
more or less a library, or is this considered the same as me buying
something and lending it to my friends, or how does that work?

Dave, the short answer to your question about copyright is: it's legal
for anyone to buy a video, at list price, and then rent or loan it out.
TVR works just like you buying something and lending it to your
friends.

The long answer is:

http://technicalvideorental.com/FAQ....ental_legality

Is it legal for TVR to rent out these videos?

Yes.

Under US Copyright law, one does not need permission of the original
copyright holder to rent out a lawfully acquired copy of the video
(this is known as the "first sale" doctrine, and is explained in 17
USC, section 109 of the US Copyright law).

Under Canadian Copyright law, one does not need permission of the
original copyright holder to rent out a lawfully acquired copy of the
video (Canadian Consolidated Statutes and Regulations C-42 - 3(1) gives
the copyright holder no right to restrain the rental of lawfully
acquired copies of video recordings).

Technical Video Rental is a member of VSDA (Video Software Dealer's
Association), a trade association of video rental stores and companies.
TVR has verified with the VSDA that our business renting videos
complies with all US and Canadian copyright laws.

Technical Video Rental retains the services of Interaction Law in
Washington, DC. TVR has verified with Interaction Law that our business
renting videos complies with all copyright laws.

Technical Video Rental is aware of the rights held by video renters
under the copyright laws, and vigorously defends itself against false
accusations of copyright infringement.

You can read more about the First Sale Doctrine on the internet.

I rented a pair of DVDs on welding about the time this thread started. I
was actually waiting for the package to arrive when the original message
of this thread was posted. I'm now a happy customer.

I thought the pricing was very good especially after taking out the cost
of shipping two directions. Packaging and handling isn't free either. I
did get a discount for ordering both of the two DVDs in the series that
I selected. I don't think that a discount applies for ordering 2 or more
unrelated DVDs, but that might be something to consider if it doesn't.

I'm willing to let him keep the money. Just rented a couple of videos.

No, I indicated that I'd placed my first order just now. One was in
stock and one not, so they have to do two shipments anyway (a
complication to discounting multiple orders that could only be worked
around by having real-time inventory, adding at least some up-front
cost to their operation). The Paypal buttons are relatively
unsophisticated, but easy to use.

Vast selection of stuff to choose from. I'll probably do this on and off
for a while.

Yes, a nice broad selection. I imagine the quality varies, but at $10
many are probably worth a look.
