OT- Utilities, Antivirus & spam

I'm looking for recommendations for Antivirus and Spam elimination (or
reduction) software. I find plenty out there but would like to hear from
users instead of the advertisments and claims made on the box. Any
favorites?

Also, I use a dial up connection on my desktop computer and have a wireless
network to my laptop. Any recommendations on proxy server software? I have
it working now with the Default Gateway but have no control of hanging up or
dialing from the laptop. I wish I could just "Share" the modem like you
would a drive or printer. I tried windows internet connection sharing a few
times and when it did work, it would dial the internet when no one was
operating the computer. (I'm guessing some software (adobe, real player,
quicktime) was trying to check for updates. Wish I could sue Microsoft for
making my computer do things I never requested or gave permission for it to
do.

I use neither. Both my ISPs cathc virtually all of both.
Common sense and care opening emails takes care of the balance.

If you get nervous, you can always run Panda Activescan for free once a
week or so.

ZoneAlarm (the free basic version) took care of those ill-behaved
programs, such as Acrobat Reader 6

My favorites, all free, a

AVG http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Easy cleaner http://www.sharewarejunkies.com/9zwd6/easy_cleaner.htm (be

Always looking for better but here's the best mix I know of. I have also
gotten specilized tools from Sophos for certain bugs. Also, I never keep
anything on a computer that I would care if the rest of the world sees. No
bank stuff, credit card stuff, no plans to shoot people.

(Didn't we just do this?)

AVG antivirus from www.grisoft.com and AdAware from www.lavasoft.com
will get you 99% of the way there. Spybot Search & Destroy will get you
the rest of the way, but it's hard to learn.

Get the names exactly right, lots of imitators out there who (a) charge
(these 3 are free), (b) don't deliver anti-anything, and (c) make things
worse.

Also, I use a dial up connection on my desktop computer and have a wireless

I've used and been very happy with Allegrosurf from rhinosoft.com -
sharware, not expensive, and does filtering, pre-fetch if you want, and
so on. Haven't used it since I switched to Mac, but you can use the
full version for free for (a month or so?).

Wish I could sue Microsoft for
making my computer do things I never requested or gave permission for it to
do.

Well, you could just not get your next OS from them...

Have you thought about connecting your modem to a router?

A small Netgear router is easy to use, and has basic firewall capability built
in. Not only that, they are built extremely well, well documented, and cheap.

At my house we use Norton for virus protection, and Spybot for spyware. Only.
Anyone who uses 10 utilities is wasting their resources. Spybot is completely
simple to use and it works on about 98% of spyware. The remaining spyware (the
kind you get when you frequent slippery places -- I never ever get it, just my
kids) can be very challenging to remove but I have never found one yet whose
removal wasn't documented on the Web.

I wish I could sue Microsoft too.

AVG antivirus (free)
Spybot Search and Destroy (free)
Adaware (free)
Webroot Spy Sweeper (costs money but very good)
You need Spybot and Adaware even if you buy Spy Sweeper.

I was a long time Norton's customer, but the latest release of SystemWorks
completely fritzed my XP box to the point that I had to do a clean XP
install.
Norton's customer service was beyond awful- not just offshore, but possibly
off-planet.
And that's too bad because it was a great product.
Now I'm using McAfee's suite, which isn't quite as complete (no HD tools).
Also running ZoneAlarm, Spybot, Adaware and Diskeeper (hard drive utility,
works fantastic).

Get rid of Outlaw Exploder and install Firefox for a browser.

If you are on a dial up, get the Polarbar mailer. It has two major
advantages: Preview mode which just downloads the headers and a bit of
the text. You can then delete the crap in the server without actually
downloading the stuff. It also employs Baysean filtering which is
trainable.

Of course, best of all dump windows for eCS or Linux.

Is ADSL available in your area?

For the rare times when I need to boot 'doze, I have Zone Alarm
installed. W2000 keeps wanting to phone home. I said no.

Wish I could sue Microsoft for

Typical of M$.

In case you didn't notice, I'm not a M$ fan. :-)
