I need to replace the pc computer that serves as the control on my
Mazak CNC lathe. The I/O card for the control is on an ISA bus. The
software will run under windows XP.

It looks like the major computer makers no longer supply computers
with an ISA slot. So, does anyone know where to order one?

Karl

I don't know of any new motherboards that still have an ISA slot. You may
have to find a small computer shop locally or online that can help you out.
They will most likely deal in refurbished board which are still out there.
There are some boards maybe a year or 2 old that you might be able to find a
liquidation source for new boards. You won't be able to run the latest and
greatest CPU's or memory, but you shouldn't need to for your application. I
do have my own computer business as well, and maybe I can help you out if
you are close enough. I am located in Michigan.

Karl, I did just look on my supplier's site and there is one motherboard
shown there that has an ISA slot yet. It is for an Athlon processor and will
support up to an XP2100 CPU which would be more than enough for what you are
doing.

I have an MSI 5169 mother board with a 300MHz AMD K6-2 processor in it
that's doing nothing. 4 PCI slots and 3 ISA slots. Let me know if you are
interested in it.

Or you can go to outpst.com and search for this board.
"Soyo SY-P4I 845PE ISA Motherboard". It's a little spendy, but it's brand
new and has These features.

Soyo SY-P4I 845PE ISA Motherboard

Intel Solution Motherboard - Socket 478 :
Outpost #: 3610325
Chipset: Intel 845PE
Processor Support: Intel Celeron & Intel Pentium 3.06MHz+
Memory Support: Up to 2GB PC2700 DDR
Expansion Slot: 1x 4X AGP, 4x PCI, 3x ISA
Other Features: 4 Channel Audio, USB 2.0, LAN, Hyper-Threading Ready,

It's a new board and is available for preorder. I haven't used it, only saw
it was available. Also Computer Surplus outlet sells used computers and has
some good deals on older units. Right now they have a 600 MHz dell that has
1 ISA slot for $175.
Dell computer link at CSO. You have to get what they have before it's gone.
But they seem to get more stuff daily.

Usual disclaimer applies. I am not connected with these stores other than I
buy stuff from them on occasion.

Try: www.supermicro.com

Good eye George. Their boards are a bit pricey, but at least they are there
for an option. Thanks for the info.

The P4SCA motherboard is just what I'm looking for. I tryed "build
your own computer" once and man was I screwed, never again.

Anyone know where I can order a computer with this motherboard?

Also, I see several reccomendations of "get a used one". I'm worried
the older boxes won't run XP because of device driver problems. Is
this valid? I'm only repeating what I heard.

Try a Google search on: isa "pentium 4" . It looks like the ISA buss
is still supported in the industrial arena. Exactly what you're doing.

In my case, I still support some older medical electronics that uses
the ISA buss. We appear to have built the original cards so well that
most of the 10+ year old units are still functioning. This isn't doing
much for current sales so maybe we should start re-selling computers.
;^)

Cheers,

Kelley

You could pick up a used P3 from a major manufacturer on Ebay. You'll
save some $$$ & it should have ISA slots. I like Compaq but, there
are plenty of otheres that will work too. Since you are just using it
for a controller, your better off to get one with as few frills as
possible.

Try:
www.newegg.com
www.googlegear.com
www.aberdeeninc.com

All are listed as online retailers of SuperMicro products and I would think
that any would be willing to build you whatever you want.

Try doing a google search for "pci to isa adapter". You'll get a lot
of hits that may or may not work out. There are a lot of
considerations on the operating system, IRQ needs, bus mastering, etc.

Here is one that warns you that "If mother board chipsets no support
ISA bus just with PCI bus, can use PCI-to-ISA bridge convert PCI bus
into ISA bus, but must write a "Device Program" by yourself."

How is your chingrish? :)

Whoa, Karl!

XP is not XP, necessarily.
I, for instance can run my infrared imaging software on XP "Professional"
but it gives me only wierd errors when running XP "Home Version".

Have you tried running under the contemplated version OS?
